It's been a slow year for minis - the administrator for the game kinda lost his mind in the early part of the year - but we're back with a vengeance this September 14 for the New Zealand Star Wars Miniatures National Championships!
After a few discussions with the community here in the NZ, we want to revert the old calendar where we start the SWM Year in October with HaweraCon - yes, HaweraCon is likely coming back! - before having HamilCon in early 2020, LowerHuttaCon in April-ish, and the Nationals back in June/July. Freakin' A!
Anyhoo, we are currently at 12 competitors with a number yet to register their interest and, for the first time, we are running a three-round 100pt tournament for our Padawans or junior players (which include students learning the game and children - like my own daughter!) which currently has 3 registrations.
More to follow, but bring on the Nationals.

Second round is nearly over - there’s a Daala Elite scout Trooper squad and a Rebel Luke and Kyle squad on 2-0. Covenant can join them with a win against Seps (still going) and Republic Yobuck and Celeste are playing Fringe at the other top table.

The game went a bit slowly so I didn't end up getting the full 3pt win. 1-0 with 2pts In round 2, I played kezzamachine's Separatists with CadBH/Hondo/AurraAssassin/AsajjNS/Poggle/Drones/2xR7 on Cantina. Kez was able to get an early kill against my Sentinel with Hondo, and then I ran in with my Protector and put some dmg on Asajj. Asajj and Aurra retaliated and put some damage on the Protector, and then after kez outactivated he ran in Cad to shoot 3 of my guys. However, he was only able to kill an Ugnaught because of all my ranged defense, and then I won init with all my init control (Cov Watch Circle, Sense the Future, Anticipation) and killed Cad with Q'Anilia and the Togruta Seer (sacrificed the XT-6, which kez forgot I could do). Kez had killed all my door control and he had double Override, so now he locked me out of his side of the map and killed my Protector. Then after he outactivated he started moving in his Drones to base my guys (all huddled together in the bar). I used Raana Tey's Force Diminish to turn off their CEs from Poggle, so I was able to kill them without taking any damage. I ended up killing Aurra but not quite getting to 200 because Asajj made her Parry saves. 2-0 with 4pts In round 3, I played kiki's Imperials with Daala/Nyna/Piett/ImpOff/Mas/8xEliteScout/filler on Cantina. Kiki had no Mouse Droids, so during the second round I was able to catch him off guard with a Force Diminish suppressing Daala's Charging Fire, so most of his guys couldn't shoot that round. Then I pretty much threw my squad in his face and he wasn't able to stand up to my beef. Force Diminish shone in this matchup as Raana stopped kiki's Scouts from getting Piett's Opportunist for a couple of rounds as well. The Cov Protector made a lot of LS Defense saves, and even though I didn't get much Bravado I was able to do enough damage to take his guys out quickly without too many losses. 3-0 with 7pts In round 4, I played TheHutts/Graham's Rebels with LukeHOE/KyleRH/LandoInfil/AELeia/Jan/Juno/Rieekan/Dodonna/Artoo/ObiFS/filler on Theed Palace. Graham got ahead early on gambit and by killing Droopy, but then I rushed in my guys and killed Luke (who had run into gambit round 1) without taking too much damage from Djem So attacks. Since Luke was the heart of his squad, Graham didn't have much beef or damage output left after that. I killed Juno, allowing me to use the Senator's cannon shot to some extent (though obviously not against Kyle or Jan). At a very key point, Raana was able to make 2 or so Jolt saves after getting hit by Kyle, so she was able to take Kyle out. Eventually I was able to scrape out a (still close) victory. 4-0 with 10pts No top 4 playoffs, so we went straight to the final after that, which was a rematch against Graham, on Theed again. This time he played a lot cagier with Luke and Kyle, and I wasn't able to get in there to do any damage with his filler blocking the way (I really needed a Cov Executor to give everyone Force Leap, obviously). I ran into the central room anyway, but with Luke's Double/Twin/GMA with Overwhelming Force, Djem So, and Juno's Disruptive, there wasn't much I could do and my guys started dropping quickly. I managed to take out Kyle with Raana, but that left Raana to get killed easily, taking the punch out of my squad. After that Graham was able to defeat the rest of my squad without too much trouble. Congratulations to Graham on another NZ Nationals win! I had a lot of fun playing Covenant and I'm pretty happy with where I placed considering that I moved away from my go-to Fringe squad to something maybe not quite as competitive.

Joe's covered our games pretty well - I agree. Often Kyle is the key piece in the squad with a higher damage output, but against Covenant it's all about Luke. The key piece for covenant is the bravado lady - she turns a lot of their pieces into serious threats, and it was noticeable in the first game how Joe had a lot more trouble dropping my lower point pieces like Jan Ors and Artoo.

It's pretty brutal against Tier 1.5 squads - doesn't really have the tools to hang against Thrawn, but pretty good against a lot of squads with lots of tricks.
Congratulations to Joe on his second place, as well as Darth Moore who finished tied on 10 points with Joe and I after Swiss, but dipped out on strength of schedule. Thanks to Kezza for organising a fun (and punctual) tournament.

Artoo’s a movement breaker - can push Luke around the board or help Obi Force Spirit keep up. Double door control and +2 attack are also helpful. I don’t like doubling down on ranged defence and I can’t quite squeeze Lobot in without dropping Juno or something. Can also only have one ugnaught with Specialisation.
