What are we gonna see at Gen Con?
We know we have more players that want to play in the champs than space allows, but it’s still fun to guess what we’ll see.
I’m guessing half or more Sith and OR
Sith - Tulak squads and Triumvirate
A lot of talk about the meta being Tulak and counter Tulak. Tulak hurt melee badly, especially any that rely on CEs. The Triumvirate has no CEs and tons of beef, it’s one melee squad that might give Tulak trouble.
Old Republic - Army of Light, Revan/Meetra, Arkanian Jedi General + Revanchist Masters, and Bastila + Ven Zallow + Jaq and/or Carth
With the Stifling Attack ruling, everyone and their mom will want to play Ven Zallow. That likely means Bastila. She also screws CEs, so it’s gonna be hard for a CE dependent squad to shine in this meta. Also - via Tulak’s melee FU double distraction and Bastila’s ABM, players will be looking to other boosts that get around CE disruption. Such as - Bastila (+10 damage), Revan SC (quickstrike), and Army of Light and Arkanian Jedi General squads (prideful). (OR, OR, OR, OR)
Might see a Vong squad wander in to counter Sith/OR
A certain someone may try and throw a curveball and run double lancer.
Outside those factions, it’s much more likely be non-melee. Mando’s Allies, Resistance, Thrawn+shooters, Talon Karrde + shooters, Black Sun.
I’m saying 3 Sith 2 OR 1 NR 1 Imp 1 Sep 1 Mando

I'll say Mandos and Republic.
1 Sith 1 OR 1 NR 1 Imp 2 Republic 2 Mando 1 Fringe
This is difficult as we had fewer regular tournaments to see any pattern developing. Last year we had more tournaments that consistently featured specific squads (JRM). This year we had fewer "regular" tournaments showing much of anything about the meta.
There has been plenty of talk about Tulak. He was played by 2 players at the Illinois regional but was not featured in the Ohio or Indiana regionals. He then played in a Vassal tournament that required everyone to build Sith squads. I do not agree that Tulak hurts melee "badly" but I don't have time to argue and it's not the main topic of this thread. I think too many players have Tulak on the brain for him to be heavily featured. I think Kybuck will be there in some form. Jabba is still really good, but I kinda doubt he will show up at GenCon. Thrawn is still powerful and could show up. I think Bastila squads are good and might get played. Tarre Vizla or Din could be popular choices.

There has to be at least one Fringe. Maybe someone will try with the errata'd Jabba (still strong), but more likely the ever-present Talon Karrde as Tim mentions, to put a stop to Force shenanigans. I'm not seeing the best Separatist squad archetypes (Nightsisters, Black Sun) as being very good against the gatekeeper Tulak squads, though I wouldn't rule out some people playing the faction regardless.
1 Fringe 1 Republic 1 Mandos 2 Sith 2 OR 1 Imps 1 Vong 1 NR

No clue on the breakdown, but I think kybuck will always appear, and fringe pirates are far better than anyone realizes and should show up but probably won't

I think the Rebels could see some play with the new v25 pieces of Obi Wan, Leia, Hero of Endor and Senator Bail Organa.

The Front of the Pack
Imperial- Sid and Vader still a very strong squad. Thrawn is still king until proven otherwise
Fringe- Hutts are still very strong Pirates have yet to make an appearance and are worthy, IMO
Mando- some form with either Din version/with or without Talon
Sith- Tulak is super strong, closing on top tier. Triumvirate is top tier
OR- some form of Crusaders. Will struggle, but the movement can bail it out
The rest of the possibilities
Seps- BX is best available, but needs one more piece to be Gen Con competitive Vong- Would disrupt a Force heavy meta. Doubt it shows because I'm not there. LOL Rep- Yobuck struggles in the limelight, still a top squad Rebels- Anyone up for another Prison Break? Can Dead Bothans get there? New Republic- has the meta left Solo Charge behind

Ok, so here's what we saw at GenCon this year:
1x Mandalorian (Independent Outfit with Talon) 3x Imperial (all very different: Inquisitors, Weir, Nightsisters) 4x Sith (3 of them built around Tulak) 1x Separatist (Ziro and Black Sun) 1x OR (Meetra and Revan) 1x NR (NR unique pilots)
11 squads, and none of these factions among them: 0x Yuuzhan Vong 0x Republic 0x Rebel 0x Fringe (though the Talon-Mando squad almost qualifies)
As for activation counts: The average squad had 10 activations: 15 was the highest and 7 was lowest. Only one squad had a Reinforcement-type effect (via Sidious Sith Emperor's CE), and that was the squad that had 7 activations.

Thanks for posting those squads, Trevor.
I'm giving full marks to Tim for guessing every one of the factions correctly, plus a mostly correct distribution.

Yeah, I re-read the thread last night after posting this, and I was impressed at how accurate he was. Impressive. Most impressive!

My squad had 13 acts not 12 (you missed Kneesaa in my squad). I know that hardly affects the average count, but I felt it should be noted. Probably more of note - my squad did have Lobot. Crucial for me in each game

gandalfthegreatestwizard wrote:I'm giving full marks to Tim for guessing every one of the factions correctly, plus a mostly correct distribution. Thanks! 2 more entries than expected (wasn’t sure if they were going to fit in a sold out event), and they both brought imperial. I was very close to the 1/2 Sith/OR (5/11), and pretty accurate with saying the rest would be mostly non-melee. The melee that was present was not super CE dependent. 1st place - boosted shooters with CE disruption and Force bubble 2nd place - Melee Beef with many undisruptable boosts 3rd and 4th place - Tulak 5th place - cloaked non-melee (lightning storm) 6th and 7th place - super stealth boosted shooters (one which cannot be disrupted) Kudos to AceAce for bringing the squad that wasn’t high on the radar that did amazing. It was a melee centered squad that did have CEs (one moot, one minor, one undisruptable, and one major), but had the beef and the undisruptable boosts to make it through. Congrats of course to Jason for taking the title. Well deserved. The meta will be different for Vassal Con. Not 100% different, but there will be a marked shift.
