Here's a squad I've made trying to make the old Gundarks useful, and I think it does a pretty good job of it: --Gundark Assault-- 27 Lobot 88 Gundark x4 18 Twi'lek Black Sun Vigo 14 General Rieekan 11 Ithorian Commander 8 R2-D2 7 Leia Organa, Senator 18 Varactyl Wrangler x3 3 Mouse Droid 6 Ugnaught Demolitionist x2 Preferred Reinforcements: (Lobot) 12 Varactyl Wrangler x2 (Lobot) 5 Caamasi Noble (Lobot) 3 Ugnaught Demolitionist (200pts. 20 activations) http://www.bloomilk.com/Squads/View.aspx?ID=49565

Yep, that works. Its biggest weakness being that as soon as your Varactyl's go down, your Gundark's suffer a great deal in effectiveness. Another route you can go is the sheer damage route with the Jedi Exile.
Jedi Exile (has Empathy) Gundarks Rodian Huntmaster Weequay Leader.
They are attacking five times at 30 damage a pop. Of course, they have to stand still to do this. ;)
I think your squad may be more cost effective if you can protect those Varactyl's, because all those attacks while still being able to move six is pretty brutal. Nice work. :D

Yeah, if they go down it's pretty much over. That's why the Gundarks have to kill all the Accurate shooting enemies first. Evade and Mobile from Rieekan helps, as does double Override from Lobot and R2.
That squad would be killer, if you can surround a beat with Gundarks, that's like 700 damage. To bad you would have to surround them; anyone would rather take that AoO than sit still and take that kind of a beating.
Yet another option would be to have them with Wedge and Leia in the NR, and possibly Garm for the Ithorian Commander, though that's a lot to pay.

Agreed. Thats why I think your squad is probably the most cost effective of those options.

I have a squad like this, however it uses Rakghouls because with Ambush and Rakghoul disease there damage output is great! You can also turn your enemies into more Rakghouls! It is a squad that I have had fun with and pulled off once but is very fragile.

Yeah the Raks are fun to play too. I don't have enough of them to really make them effective, and their fragility hurts. At least you their cost is low enough that you can field a ton of them, unlike the Gundarks.

yea, im trying to acquire more raks for my Exar Kun to run with, but they are 2 stang hard to get. i like this build because it gives the Gundarks a use. with the Evades and mobility, they become nastier

Yeah, the Gundarks have a pretty impressive stat line with these commanders: 90HP, 18 def, +16 atk, 20 dmg, melee, quad attack, evade, GMA, for 22 points. I have another squad that is similar to this, but uses Knobby White Spiders (any Fringe character with Quad is good with the Rebels!) instead of Gundarks.
