As you can see, many people are biased towards wookiees due to their annoyance with Gungans. That may skew the results if you are looking for competitive.
In terms of synergy, I would say the gungans have an upper hand. In terms of competitiveness, I think you can do better with Gungans, but only if you are skilled enough. Gungans take a lot of work to become effecient at playing.
When it all comes down to it, I would say gungans, because you are going to learn to play a difficult squad which will enhance your game playing skills, and once you are good with them, you are going to do better than you would if you used wookiees.
If it wasn't Star Wars Minis, I would say go with Wookiees. I too am not a big fan of Gungans, but if you want the greatest benefit in terms of you playing SWMs, then
GUNGANS.

harmonm4 has a point..... i dont see any Wookie shield bearers running across the battle map. But imagine if they did......
