Is it legal to mark the gambit squares on your map permanently/play on a marked map, in a DCI tournament?

I would not see why not as you are not changing the map terrain/layout itself. i would say as long as you did it with just a highlighter or something of that nature that does not obscure to much of the map it should be fine. But don't take my word for it, Wait for one of the Gurus.

I've seen marked maps in the regionals and nothing was said. In fact alot of people laminate their maps for marking blown doors and such. I don't think it is a problem. I was thinking of making a cut out from a report cover for marking gambit. Just lay it on the map. I keep thinking it but have never gotten around to doing it LOL

Philnlil has laminated maps and tapes an overhead projector sheet that has magic-markered outlines of gambit squares onto the map. Works well. Just don't use a wide tip marker ... that can hide the map terrain lines underneath.

I've seen permanently marked gambit zones on maps at GenCon.
The judge liked the idea.

You could use clear laminate (or any clear plastic) and mark it on that, then lay it over the map. Then you only need one for all your maps! ;)

Thanks everyone! (Particularly DarthJak, I don't think I could get a more official answer than what was allowed at Gencon.)

My wife and I had actually gone through and marked all of our maps for Gambit before thinking about legality.Blushing But it doesn't obscure the terrain in any way/shape/form.

It was really simple, we put a black dot in the center of each square with a sharpie. Any square that was too dark for the black dot, we put a silver dot with a silver paint Sharpie.

It took some time, daubing the sharpies on a piece of card-stock to loosen up th ink (as the map's gloss will wear into the tip and make it seem to run dry), but we like it. :)
