This is the first challenge for the Variant Squad Building League.

Challenge #1: The Entourage

SQUAD-BUILDING RULES:
200 points.
Faction rules: No restrictions - mixed factions are allowed.
Other: none.

GAME RULES:
Only one character (the "lead") may cause damage to the enemy. Other characters may do everything as usual, but any damage caused to the enemy and anything that would cause an enemy to be defeated is ignored unless it comes from the lead. Scoring is normal, including gambit.

SCHEDULE:
Squads must be submitted by 12:00 noon on Saturday, March 20, 2010.
Games may be played starting at noon on Saturday, March 20, 2010.
Games must be reported by 11:59pm on Sunday, March 28, 2010.

All times EDT (New York time).

Note:

In another thread, many people have already designed squads for this challenge over the past few days. In fact, one of the main motivations for starting the league was the fact that I wanted to see which squads would actually win in this format. If you made a squad and want to enter the league, please re-post your squad in this thread (this is the first official thread for the league). I started a new thread so that people aren't automatically entered if they aren't interested in the league.

Tyranus is the lead.

Tyranus with Tarpals, evade, and lots of extra force for 100 auto damage in a turn (Force Lightning 4 - twice - for 50 damage each). Sacrifice Obi-Wan right away to give Tyranus 8 extra force and MotF3. 3 rolls to block lightsabers, 4 rolls to evade. MTB to sacrifice Obi-Wan, then the fodder, then eventually Yoda to give Tyranus MotF4 and 6 more force, then finally the probe droid to kill himself. And getting initiative every single round. Doombot to tow Tyranus, C-3PO to possibly take an attack.

A triple-twin attacking Ultra Battle droid with a potential +20 attack, an extra +4 defense, and with an extra +10 damage (hitting for 30s). Add onto that endless repairing from lab droids, missiles 30, damage reduction 10, flamethrower 20, and density projector. The droid may just be unstoppable.

Dash has 3 attacks and twin with +18 attack and with 20damage, penetration 20, and can activate twice a round for 240damage, force for re-rolls, and R2 to move around. Dash FTWFlapper

The idea for this squad is to counter a lot of the major threats you guys have come up with, but I maybe miles off the mark :) I am a complete noob so go easy lol

The basic principle is that the Dignitarys are diplomats so are non-targetable, they will create a "human shield" around GAT, Boba and the two Gungans. They will stick close enough not to allow gaps for an r2 towed saber wielder to get at the core. They block any yobuck, lancers by stopping them approaching the core players.

As the core is protected by the diplomats they have cover, so the uggies will run out front when missile attackers approach, or for heavy fire, forcing the shooter to attack them unless they have accurate shot. This should give some protection to missiles (from a b3) and a good round or so against some nasty shooters.

Once the uggies have done their job, the shield bearers will help reflect some of the heavy fire coming from the big shooters. This will only help to some degree I admit but should provide some blocking as well potential reflected damage.

GAT prevents force attacks such as lightning from touching the core team. GAT also get Master Tactician forcing initiative where possible!

Boba meanwhile should get enough time to squeeze off his multiple attacks, flamethrower or Bounty Hunter. Even at standard shots he is going to potentially do some nasty damage.


It will take a lot of clever movement to advance I guess but it was me trying to build with counters to the nasties we see above, rather than try to compete against them with direct firepower.

Mara Jade is the leader. She gets cunning/opportunist twin with force renewal. The idea is to keep sly moore adjacent to Mundi at all times. So after Ki Adi Mundi goes, Sly moore will go via Mundi's CE.

So it would be something like Mara Jade attacks. Ki adi mundi activates which then activates Sly Moore who tries to activate Mara Jade again. Then B'omarr Monk depending on who he could see would try to reactivate Mara Jade or Mundi who would re activate Sly moore for another chance of Mara jade to attack.

Body guards are there just to take the damage for MJ

SUBMISSIONS CLOSED, BEGIN PLAYING GAMES

I'll give an extension for anyone who wanted to enter the league but had their squad posted to the wrong thread. (You can't change your squad after the deadline, though. I know it's a bit confusing that I started a new thread on the same topic for the league.)

You can start playing games now. Both players need to report the results here in this thread. Brief reminder of the rules for games:

* You can play up to 3 official games this week. Opponents are self-selected and play at their convenience.
* All 3 games you have to use different squads.
* You can't use your own squad in the first game you play.
* Can't play against your own squad.

Challenge ended. No games were played so we're all tied at 5. I started a game with yggral but we didn't get a chance to finish it. We'll give this another try with Challenge #2, but if we don't have more than a couple games played on Challenge #2, I'll end the league early and try a format that will get more participation. "No commitment necessary" perhaps worked too well.
