Any word on whether anyone has picked up the license?

The Star Wars license was picked up, including the license to be able to produce a miniatures game. No word on whether they also got the license to the WotC rules (unlikely) or if any type of miniatures game is planned. Some people know what company has the license, but I haven't seen anyone share that information publicly.

I haven't heard anyone mention a name. I've also heard a couple interesting theories, such as the possibility that someone bought up the licenses specifically so the game could not be continued (I can see Neko/WizKidz doing this since SWM are in a similar market as Heroclix). I've also heard that if the game comes back it might not be exactly 100% the way we're used to it (not sure what this means, too ambiguous).

They would have been the best ones, I think. Had they gotten the license, then any minis they'd make would very likely have been the same scale as Heroclix and fine for SWM's stand-ins - perfect for customs and the v-sets.

The license includes miniatures, but it's (I think) tied to CCG and RPG too, like it was for WotC. The company may have bought the license for other types of games, but no minis game.

A Star Wars themed game along the lines of War of the Ring (the boardgame) would be awesome.

BigGrin Maybe like a streamlined version of the old Avalon Hill's oh so cool "Freedom in the Galaxy" boardgame, assuming that streamlining a monster of a game like that is even possible.

(Personally, I'm still waiting for FFG to hopefully reprint War of the Ring... Crying )

Rumour on the street is that the license was picked up primarily to produce a role playing game. No official plans for a minis game however it is not being ruled out at this time.

You might want to try trading for it on boardgamegeek.com. I lucked out and acquired a copy of WotR that way about a month ago. The person who owned the game actually contacted me and offered WotR in exchange for my German version of Scepter of Zavandor + $20.

Most likely whoever bought the license bought it for the RPG. I would be shocked if whoever bought the license would put out any collectible mini game just due to the cost. Lets face there is a small market for the game with a lot of peeps actually get the figs just for rpg game. I hope I am wrong and they make a game that is similar two the WOTC game. I love the V-set which i hope will keeps peeps still interested in the original rules.BlooMilk

Bioware I reckon, with a ton of money riding on The Old Republic MMO they will want to claw back in more than just game subscriptions. Blizzard did it with World of Warcraft so why not ? Sneaky

Even if the license was bought primarily for RPG issues, the minis could still play a huge role. I mean, STRICTLY for the RPG aspect, look at DnD. The combat is built specifically for minis. What RPGer wouldnt want his game with Boba Fett as a NPC to actually have Boba Fett. I recently played the new DnD after having not played since about '94 and it was awesome. Of course, the guys I was playing with were hardcore and had a collection of DnD minis that they could pretty much accurately represent any of the monsters in the monster manual with the actual mini. But that extra realism (ha! realism in a fantasy game!) made it that much more entertaining.

Does the current RPG (or the one that just died) utilize the minis in combat?

they aren't 100% needed and to be of use to the RPGers, they will not to be unrandomized and be sold like heres a group of stromtroopers lvl x or heres a male and female of every race/class etc,...

1) I really, really doubt Lucas allowed any company to buy the brand so that they would sit on the license, and not produce any product, to keep rival companies from competing with them. I really dont think he'd let that fly.

2) Our lgs has, I think, at least 1 more copy of War of the Ring, as well as I think a couple copies of the expansion, for like $60. I know they will mail stuff as well. If anyone is interested, bloomail me, and I'll send you their info.

well I know the DND minis are not sold like that and although are not 100% needed, adds to the collect-ability of them when played either as part of the RPG or as the separate game themselves.
