Hey everybody,
As I'm brand new to the game and checking out stores I was wondering if there are any sets that are "must have" if you can find them?
I've taken a look at a few of the online retailers and will probably be ordering some from them. Seems like most sets are available. Just curious if there's anything to get when I find them in brick & mortar.
Thanks

Champions of the Force, if you can find it for retail price or less, jump on it. It's got a ton of great pieces, and is an older set so it's harder to find.
Legacy of the Force also has lots of good stuff in it. Tons of great, fun Sith pieces, and of course others as well.
Imperial Entanglements was a big leap forward for the meta. Mouse Droids, Twi'lek Black Sun Vigos, Rieekan, Crix, C-3PO Ewok Deity (just kidding =P), Dash Rendar RS, Palpatine on Throne, and lots of other great stuff.
If you stop by your local Target store, you can find (most likely) Imperial Entanglements for 7.49 a pack, Galaxy at War and Jedi Academy for 8.99, The Force Unleashed (a huge set) for 10.99, and occasionally Legacy of the Force, Knights of the Old Republic, Revenge of the Sith, and Clone Wars.
I also recommend picking up the Clone Wars Starter Set if you can find it at Target. It's got the most up-to-date rules, a useful piece (General Obi-Wan Kenobi), a two-sided map, and a die. Good deal!

I'd concentrate on buying singles as opposed to boosters. for a few reasons.
Boosters are getting harder to find online, they're still a lot out there, but you may want to really concentrate on getting the characters you really want beefier its too hard to find the rare ones.
go to ebay and see if you can find anyone dumping there collection for cheap.
Darktimes and Masters of the force are pretty cheap everywhere right now as well.

DT and MotF are usually the only boosters on sale at the online websites, while all the other boosters are on sale at Target/Fred Meyer/Giant Eagle (if you can find them).

I think it depends on what factions you play. If you play Republic/Separatists, go for Clone Wars or Galaxy at War. If you are more Rebel/Imperial, go for Imperial Entanglements. If you collect everything, I'd personally go for Jedi Academy just because it has a big range.

The first thing you'll want is the Clone Wars starter. It comes with dice, a rulebook, and a couple of maps, as well as a great figure, General Obi-Wan Kenobi. After that you'll want a couple of Ugnaught Demolitionists. They're common figures from Champions of the Force. CotF is hard to find these days, so you may want to look at buying them as singles. You'll want a mouse droid or two. They're uncommon figures from Imperial Entanglements. That means that there is one mouse droid for every 6 boosters, so again, you may want to buy one or two as a single.
If you play Empire or Republic get a Mas Amedda. He's a rare figure from Champions of the Force. Most everyone has one in their toolbox, but with mouse droids you can get by without one.
As far as boosters go, the more recent sets are more playable than the older ones. I started my collection with Rebel Storm and worked my way up. In doing so I got destroyed regularly. It's better to start from Masters of the Force or another recent set and work your way down.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for the great feedback everybody. Didn't get a chance to reply much last week as I was at a conference in San Francisco.
While there I hit a target for kicks and bought a TFU booster and 2 IE boosters. I'd read about the Rancor in TFU and tried to pick the heaviest. Got a TIE Crawler. :) Oh well, so much for n00b cherry picking. :)
I did get the following Rares:
Leia of Cloud City Arica General Crix Madine
I also got a Twi'lek Black Sun Vigo in with the uncommons & commons. And I picked up a lot of 5 demolitonists on auction.
Based on the feedback so far here's my next plan. It's focused on basic maps & supplementing my CW starter:
Pick up the following:
- the 07 starter (darth & obi). I have the clone wars starter but figured this would be a good way to start playing OT as well - the three CW map packs. It looks like a nice way to round out the starter, plus my daughters like the characters - attack on endor
I might also pick up barriss offee, JK as a single to go with Luminara just for kicks.
I'll plan on getting the custom map packs as well, they look pretty nice. But I need to get some play time in with the game first I think. Now that my travel schedule appears to have calmed down hopefully that will happen. :)
Also I'm keeping an eye out for lots on the bay & trade forums. I figure I'll keep my focus on Clone Wars/Prequel & Original Trilogy since that's what my kids know the best. I won't limit myself however.
Thanks again for the feedback and feel free to chime in with additional suggestions!
