If Exar uses transfer essance with the Kel Dor BH, does the BH do 40 dmg before being removed?

They Can. Its actually your call. When they are defeated, you can pick the order of exars placement and the self destruct. Im not sure why you would ever want exar to take the 40 damage, but i image there's some 1 in a million scenario where it might pay off.
The common method is to let the self destruct go through first, and then finish off any enemies with triple attack.

The Kel Dor is removed, and you resolve the effects of him being defeated, before you can place Exar. You cannot remove the Kel Dor, place Exar, and then resolve the effects of the Kel Dor being defeated. This is covered in the FAQ.
