I just got 2 of these and reading the card it seems the squad cover only works if they have the same name, so I'd need 4 shock troopers to use it? Or is there some errata that lets Storm Troopers give them squad cover?

Oh well, just have to settle for cover+Vader Imperial Commander+Felucian Stormtrooper Officer, that gives them what Def 28?

When the first one dies they all lose the squad ability. It's especially dumb on uncommons - seems like a sales gimmick to me. You need 2 cases worth of the uncommon figure to get enough to activate the squad ability.

I always thought that the total number of same name characters needed to activate a "squad" ability was 3. It doesn't stipulate 3 additional charcters, does it?

It does. 3 OTHER characters with the same name.

So you need two characters for Recon to work?
Squad Cover +4 Defense while 3 allies with the same name as this character are within 6 squares
Recon Roll twice for initiative once per round, choosing either roll, if any character with Recon in the same squad has line of sight to an enemy

no, it's just poorly worded. It says "any" charater, so the character can be the one with recon to begin with

My issue is that they seem to follow the same logic. So why does one SA include the character with the SA as part of the qualifier and the other does not. Recon states "in same squad" but we all know that you only need one piece with Recon. Yet characters with the Squad abilities do not count themselves as one of the three pieces needed with same name. Characters can heal themselves, be adjacent to themselves yet are not considered having the same name as themselves.

Recon is (poorly) worded that way to clarify that only one character on your squad may use it per round, no matter how many characters with Recon qualify at the time.

Recon makes much more sense as a glossary entry, than what should be on the card. Any way, the FAQ makes it clear how these abilities work.
