Hey guys, i just managed to a get a friend into star wars minis! (Yes, i made him well aware that the game was discontinued).

I threw the following army at him:
3x Mousers
Basilisk War Droid 51
Canderous Ordo 48
Mandalorian Captain 23
Mandalorian Marauder 15

Ive been coaching him, and some times giving him some tactical opinions when he plays me. As he's new to the game, he's still figuring it out. However, this particular squad has really messed him up.

My biggest recommendation so far was door control, but he lacks much in the way of it at this time, as his collection has just started.

However, he did just purchase some bulk vong from ebay, and is really wanting to field some of them. Can anyone recommend a good vong squad that can stand agaisnt this? I said nom bomb would probably mess this team up real good. What are other possible builds? what about builds without nom?

Strafe Squads are a tough matchup for any swarm type squads, which is mainly what the Vong do. So yeah, Nom Bombs would be his best bet against the War Droid. Yomin Carr plus anything with Twin and a good VCA against the rest. That way he'll be more likely to get damage against your Marauders, either through a failed parry and/or failed Poison.

http://www.bloomilk.com/Squad/Details/72371 - nom squad - use zuckk to stick either basilisk or ordo in a safe place - if init is won, intuition out to shoot, then use movement to run back behind a wall - if init is lost, use intuition to stay hidden with zuck. The melee are more protection for the shooters, so advance carefully with them and do not outrange the shooters.

http://www.bloomilk.com/Squad/Details/49091 - without nom - Dash helps finish the Bas once it strafes, and can really hurt Ordo if he stays in place to shoot 6 times in a round. Similar to above, in that the melee are meant to protect the shooters, rather than run out alone. Keep them protected well, until necessary. Both of these are more or less classic melee interference squads, so should help your friend learn to play the game well. You can change out the JHs for OGs and vice versa based on what you all have.

As an additional note, make sure you play Gambit scoring, if you're not already. I wouldn't be surprised if he's running into trouble from a camped Canderous with Twin. Gambit would help with that, at least forcing Canderous close enough where they'd only take on blast from him before they based.

If you're already doing that, make sure he is picking a solid map with no long LOS.

Otherwise, it's just a matter of experience. Your's is not a tough squad to beat once you begin to understand the intricacies of placement and LOS.
