I have played in games where shooting into melee was not allowed. When an enemy engages into melee combat with one of the figures, the only way to defeat the enemy was to end him/her through melee. The question is, can you shoot into that group? Say, I have an open shot at that group and want to help take down that enemy. Is that possible? Or am I not allowed to use range shots against an enemy who is engaged in melee with one of my other unit?

Yes you can
other pieces provide cover... a target with stealth may be an issue ... sniper helps ... accurate shot to pick your targets is always handy.
House rule: we play if you shoot through one of your own pieces and roll a 1 , you hit your own piece (good for a laugh)

I believe shooting into Melee cannot be done in D&D Minis. Either that was a house rule, someone got confused in what game they were playing, or some other reason.

You do not engage in melee combat in SWM, so there would be no situation where you'd be "shooting into melee".
A character may attack any legal target regardless of what other characters are adjacent to it.

Whoever told you was probably getting it confused with the Star Wars RPG where you take a penalty for shooting into Melee.
