"At the start of the skirmish, after set-up, you may replace one allied Imperial commander on your squad with an Imperial character of equal or lesser cost."
Ability to tailor your squad to the opposition.
There have been discussions on these and Gamers forums discussing options. For instance start with Vader-Dark Jedi and option to bring in Vader-SotJ or Vader-UL (giving up 5 victory points).

You could start with Old Grand Admiral Thrawn for the double Ysalamiri and then swap in Mi'Thrawn if that is a better fit. Only losing 5 points, but keeping Master Tactician.

Another potential use is to start with the old school Emperor Palpatine, Sith Lord, so you can bring in Order 66 characters like Captain Rex, then have the option to swap Palpatine for something like Darth Vader, Scourge of the Jedi or Joruus C'Baoth.

I like your thinking; that would be epic!

Not my idea - someone asked about it on swmgamers - it's awesome though.
It's a shame there's no one who works that well with Imperial Governor Tarkin - who you'd probably want to have with Rex - costed just below 62 points.

When you replace a figure, that figure is no longer is on the board, so it no longer has any effect on the game.
The combo with Rex is because you remove Palpatine Sith Lord after the squad is built, so removing him has no effect.

Nothing remains.
You take the card and mini you want to replace, and put them back in your box.
You take the card and mini you want to use, and add them to your squad instead.

I think I missed the part where the new character doesn't have to be a commander. That makes it a much more useful ability I think.
