I'm sure this has been asked before but, what the heck is the weird white powdery stuff on a lot of the Alliance and Empire figures? Did they use a different plastic or something? It almost seems like an oil of some sort. I really like that set, but that stuff is just odd. Anyone know?

When A&E was made, an inferior plasticizer was used during the molding process. This means that the bonds in the plastic are weaker then normal thus making the minis less pliable and creating the film (as the mini is effectively disintegrating).
If you want to counteract this effect, the best solution is the place the minis in boiling water for a short while. It won't stop the film, but it will delay it's formation by a sizable amount.

No, it wont.
As a matter of fact, wizards used to release articles on how to customize your minis. One of the easiest methods they recommended was boiling water, dropping the mini into it, removing the mini, moving the minis arms and legs into different positions, and submerging them in ice water while holding these new positions. The mini will then stay in the new pose.
I have done this, and it in no way effects the paint of the miniature... however, if you have customized a mini by painting it, i cannot vouch for whatever type of paint you may have used.

I'd try the Devaronian Bounty Hunter or the CS Nikto Solider first as practically any other pose is better then the default.

Wow. Good information to know. Thanks for all the help. Unfortunately I have way to many of that set to boil them all, but I'll definitely try it on the ones I really want to keep.
So that leaves me with one more question. That's not going to affect all my non A+E figures if they are in the same case is it?

So in Alliance & Empire what we got was crappy plastic quality, even worse paintjobs and some nice square bases. It's going to have a hard time in the 'best set' competition.

No. The worst that will happen is that some scuzz will rub off, but it's not going to cause your round base minis to disintegrate as well.

I believe the Rebels & Imperial mini set has the same issue. I hate the square bases of A&E. I believe it was a terrible idea.

Should I preemptively boil all of my A&E figs or does it only work once they've started getting filmy?

I don't have this problem, maybe is the altitude of my city, or how I kept, but I see in the characters that I buy, I pass a old T-shirt, and it dissapear, greettings.
