I had vassal installed and played every once in a while on our old computer. When we got a new one, I simply never went to the trouble of installing it until recently. The only trouble I had with vassal was family members getting mad at me for being on the computer too long.

Now that I've reinstalled vassal and discovered the miracle of Skype, I'll be frequenting it more.

thats one thing that has turned me off, is the whole skype thing..you can chat just fine on Vassal,so i don't see why i need a program that i'm only going to be using for one thing. The other thing is that i'm waiting to get a new computer.

Maybe YOU can chat fine with Vassal, but its been my experience that when I'm playing a game, it takes so much longer to communicate with a keyboard rather than voice. Additionally, if people are watching and commenting, responding further slows the game. Then there's always the problem with typed communication...misunderstanding and a lack of inflection in your messages. Those of you who know me know my situation, and thats one reason my time is limited. Therefore, playing a game without Skype is something I'm reluctant to do. Not saying it won't happen...just saying its not my preference.

Playing on Vassal with Skype is the next best thing to playing in person. The Los tool is amazing as well as the radius for Commander Affects. . Also, there are plenty of people that are willing to help you set up and figure out the program. Maybe I'm an Idealist, But i think the majority of SWMinis gamers are fair individuals who just want the game to continue. If someone had figured out a way to create a program for a cheating pair of Vassal Dice, then that person hopefully would be in the minority, Although one of the guys who used to come over my house used to have a dice that he had weighted. I literally, And I mean Literally threw his carcass out of the house. Nobody ever wanted to play with him. I would rather play and lose then not play at all.BigGrin Most just want to have fun.

Some may want to maintain their anonymity, then I could understand why one would not want to use Skype, But if you want a faster game, or perhaps want to get to know different players better, Skypes the way to go.

I haven't been on VASSAL much because I've been busy with video games and my computer isn't getting along with the VASSAL server so well.

I never thought about Skype for Vassal. I avoided getting skype for any reason for the longest time becuase that would mean I would have to put on pants to call people.

Several reasons.

1) My computer is slow. Too slow. Agonizingly slow. I had my first game on Sunday and it took my computer about 17 minutes to open Vassal up. Then another idontknowhowlong to get the server to work.

2) Lack of time. School. Afterschool activities. Food. Sleep. School. and so on....

3) Well I just didn't know how the whole thing worked, and I was too embarassed to ask and waste peoples' time.

As I said, I played my first game Sunday night and it was one of the best experiences I've had with minis! The fact that it was part of a regional and I won was nice, but I think the main reason was facing the awesomest opponent you could ask for! So helpful and patient with a newbie like me, big ups to him!

Hopefully I'm able to play many more games on weekends.....

I don't use the video aspect of Skype. I just have a headset with a microphone.

Qvos and I played almost every Wednesday night for 2 years, using Skype. Now that I've moved to Michigan and am less than 15 minutes away, we play in person.

What's kept off Vassal is, like many others, time. Now that the house is pretty much finished, that will free up a ton of time, and I'd like to hop back on and get some games going. We have some other players in the area that we'd like to get setup on Vassal, so when it's just not convenient to gather at someone's house, we just play online.

Maybe we can plan and set a date to get as many people as possible and start building momentum again.

I'd first used Vassal last Summer/Fall when travelling for work. It was easy to set up and get started. (Thanks Matt/Sashlon for the tutorial and games.) I played a bunch of great people and had a blast. (Yes, I did run into one guy who played a Tier 1 competitive squad in what was to be an agreed-upon fun game; but 1 of 20 games didn't curb my enthusiasm.)

Then year-end came. That's a very busy time for me at work and holidays take up my remaining time. Well, except for our Friday night league. I still make time for that. ThumbsUp

Now I can get back on again. I've checked a couple times and people weren't on. So I'll check again other times.

Granted, those other times aren't frequent right now. Maybe it's been the chasing with our other son who'd been in the hospital (yes, he's fine). Maybe it's because I get some SWM fix every week. Maybe it's because people weren't on so I don't jump to try again quickly. (Yes, that's a downward spiral if we all do that.) Maybe it's because I'm not a long-term Vassal user and haven't in-grained it in my head yet as an option when I have time. Maybe it's because my son and I have been playing some games of Axis & Allies lately (yes, the board game that takes forever to play). Maybe it's all of the above.

But I've heard the reminder that Vassal is there and the plea for people to be on it. I want to play on Vassal more. Now I need to make the effort.

I just don't point the camera at my legs, or even switch it on!

I call people without pants on all the time, and I am English, I don't even mean the same pants as you!

Chat Roulette doesn't make for a good chat interface for Vassal. Trust me on this.
