I love Stormtroopers, little plastic Stormtroopers are why I got into this game in the first place. I've been out of the game since CotF, so imagine my pleasure when I discover the 501st. Just like an Elite Stormtrooper (which I used to run all the time), but way better in groups.

But then I saw one.

This is a miniature painted by a person with a deep hatred of Stormtroopers. Perhaps a Stormtrooper killed their aunt Beru, maybe they bet on a Stormtooper in a marksmanship contest, who knows. But that paintjob is terrible.

Still, it's a good sculpt, the actual shape of the miniature isn't bad at all once you cover up the crimes visited upon it by someone who is presumably given 50 of them to paint in an hour. One repaint later, and you actually get something that looks like a Stormtrooper.

It's a simple project, all it takes is black, white, and grey paint and a steady hand. Outlining the seams in black, covering mistakes in white, and adding a little grey shading to the chest plate and you're most of the way home. The helmet wants a reference picture handy so you know where the black is supposed to go, but the sculpt has depressions in all the right places to guide you despite them not being painted on the figure as released.

That's pretty good. I need to study this a bit so i know what to do. Exacting detailing isn't my strong point.

I think Leftieswillrule has also got pics of a 501st touch up. I also gave it a try but my hand wasn't steady enough. I should give it another go though.

I like paint, but one option if your hand is a little shaky is a very fine tipped pen. Art stores will do you a .05mm tip pen that is good at drawing black lines on figures.

The thing that makes the 501st easier than many other paintjobs is you're painting creases where an armored plate meets a joint, so the sculpt is already giving you a little valley to slide the brush along.

Google images is your friend when it comes to reference pictures, here are a couple I used:

Quite an improvement! Smile

Perhaps I will start out with these guys. I can't make 'em look much worse than they did out of the box.

just because their mascara ran, doesn't make them less than a threat.

Gave it another bash. This is what one can achieve with a small brush and shakey hands.

I can't see anything that gives evidence of shaky hands :)

Very nice job! You should have stuck an old one in the bunch for better clarification of the changes.

Great job. What a tremendous difference over the slap dash job of the original. I'm just glad they didn't do any of the other Stormtroopers this poorly.
