The title is exactly what it means. Do you play star wars minis games against your self? I was dying to play a game the other day and my brother refused, so I figured, why not have some minis fun any way? I tryed it and actually had a blast. The best part is, you are always the winner! I just finished a 3 way with my self, Cantina brawl Style with rebels, imps and fringe, which was such a good game I plan to write a play report on it later, so I ask the question, do you play with your self?

Totally, especially when I've just got new pieces or there's a new v-set just out. I normally can't be bothered setting up a whole map for playing by myself, so I just play this little game where I put two teams of four pieces opposite each other, set up on my playcase. So it looks like this:

XXXX

YYYY

Then they just run in and smash each other. Obviously some pieces and factions are much more effective in this type of game than they are in an actual game. For example AniStap, QGJ Jedi Trainer, and Ferus Olin is a potent combination in this format - if you can keep AniStap alive long enough to go round for a couple of strafes, he can be devastating. But it's actually pretty useful for practicing decision making, and figuring out what pieces you like to play - normally most teams do have around 4 main attackers, so you can cut out all the little tech pieces and filler and just have the meat of each squad going at each other. Obviously it favours some factions (for instance it's difficult to keep Nen Yim safe if you're playing Vong), and winning the first initiative can be very important, but it works for me.

I'm slowly working on some one player rules. I usually find that I end up favouring one of my teams if I play against myself, so I want to make it more fair and take control of one team out of my hands. But it is slow progress trying to figure them out. And it would be more for scenario play.

I couldn't. My bad sportsmanship would lead me to murder the lying, cheating swindler I was playing.

I'm having a logic error when it comes to simultaneously revealing reinforcements. Razz

side note: every time I look at this thread, the word "by" comes to mind and my mouse hovers over the edit button...

Yes, sort of a weird thread title. To actually answer the question, yeah. I play miniatures against myself, a lot, as it lets me test out new squads that I have, as well as scenarios that I come up with.

I have and the only way I found to play competitive is to randomly choose factions with a die, then randomly choose a team build with a die (I.e. Swarm melee, beatstick ranged, stealth mixed). Then either play the best you can with each team or randomly choose a personality (aggressive, defensive, divide and conquer, etc...)

Any moves that you are unsure of roll a die and see which way the character moves, up or down, left or right. Which piece to attack. But the random team picking helps a lot.

When I lived in Japan, I HAD to play with myself (I tried to get my brother to play me, but he wouldn't). This is actually how I became a skilled player at this game; I lurked Bloomilk and the Wizards boards (weren't THOSE the days....) to learn how strategic players built squads and played, and practiced with myself. It was a great way to become familiar with the game, and take as much time as I needed to decide on a move without someone getting impatient!

I still play by myself (although less often now that my brother is much more into the game with his own large collection), primarily to playtest competitive squads against each other.

If god intended us to play with ourselves, he wouldn't have invented vassal.

Funny, that is one of my pet peeves with Vassal. I want to be able to set up a solo game with 2 or more squads using the same computer, and without using the Vassal server.

It would be a great practice tool, and I wouldn't have to worry about getting scolded at for leaving my stuff out, or having the cat prey upon my minis. Glare

In a game where everyone has perfect information it is certainly possible to play against yourself. If we're honest anytime you play against anyone else you should always be thinking to yourself "what would I do if I were them that would screw me over the worst?" which is essentially playing against yourself.

yes but what i found was its more fun using mostly melee based armies because ultimalty the strategy is to get adjacent then let the dice do the work. figures without melee, and have Twin GMA Evade and so on, are harder to play unbaised because they have more movment options and ducking and hiding and so on.

I do all the time, sometimes twice a day. You know the wife just can't keep up with me.
I also play SWM by myself on a regular basis.
