Found this last night and thought folks would be interested. I continue to be excited about the game after reading this. http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=3403

I'm not sure what it takes to get a game in Vassal, but based on what folks are seeing is this the sort of game which might be adaptable to that program? I have one person I can play with, but I'd like to find others as well since the game looks strong.

I'm underwhelmed.
I'll let someone else drop the cash to play this game. They will be looking for an opponent.

It doesn't look like they've changed it enough to make any difference?

Ah well, the buy in for this game is only a hundred bucks. I was several hundred into SSB before it became obvious it was a total dead end.

I loved collecting SWM, just like I collected Bionicles when I was a pre-teen, but after a while it's just no longer fun to collect things like this because it becomes a money vacuum; the companies just keep releasing new set upon new set to make more money (they'll keep making them as long as people keep buying them) and it's too hard to keep up with it. This is something I probably won't get into. R5Don4 wrote:Ah well, the buy in for this game is only a hundred bucks. I was several hundred into SSB before it became obvious it was a total dead end. $100 is pretty steep for getting started into any game (you could potentially buy about 5 boosters with that amount). For as interesting as it may look, I have other things to worry about before I drop $100 on a completely new game created by a company that I've never heard of. Besides, minis just won't be the same without that good 'ol d20. On a related note, I think it will be interesting to see if the community tries to incorporate the Wizards SSB into this new game. I doubt they'll be compatible at all, but it would be cool to see any ideas people come up with.

Haven't heard of Fantasy Flight? I think they make the majority of the board games out there, and their LCGs are taking a decent chunk of market share from Magic.

LoL.
SWM gamers are oddly unaware of the rest of the tabletop and boardgaming world, it seems.
The buy in price is $26, not $100 (if bought online, $35 if bought from FLGS). An entirely playable game for $26 is pretty cheap these days, especially since that would have bought you two (non-Huge) boosters back in the day, in which you'd be lucky to get one or two playable pieces out of, for sure.
Also, Fantasy Flight is pretty much the king of boardgames when it comes to Ameritrash. Eurogames are dominated by a few other companies, but nobody makes components like FF.
For anyone having trouble finding people to play boardgames with, I recommend checking out your local hobby and comic shops and asking if they have game nights or game groups. Also, forums like BoardGameGeek are good places to find local groups and players.
All that being said, game play doesn't look like anything terribly special or different enough from Wings of War, and I really didn't enjoy Wings of War. Granted, this looks a lot faster and more streamlined, but the dog fight genre doesn't really translate well to the tabletop, methinks.

I guess we have different ideas of buying into a game.

My problem is that there aren't any places like that near where I live; the nearest store that does a weekly league sort of thing is like 25 or 30 miles away, so the only minis action I get is on VASSAL, and that's seldom. Thanks for the update... the combat system looks interesting, but is a diluted GOBS2 ruleset i think. If i do pick this up, in any considerable way, it'll be played using gobs rules instead hahah. Theyve already written the death star trench run and an attack on a frieghter into gobs rules, so it wont be much to whip up stats for the gobs rules at my LGS. I think, with $100 buy in, youd hopefully get the starter and like 2 or 3 boosters. i personally sink a weeks wage (1 in 49.5 working weeks per 52) into a new hobby if I like the look of it... Its like all forms of gambling/risk taking; only risk what you are prepared to lose. Boy, did I learn that with GW40K... lol EDIT: Same with oldschool heroclix hahah, and chess sets before that... Its just they were so shiny.

I guess we have different ideas of buying into a game. Haha, I guess so. Well, even if someone must buy the game and the four expansions (Advanced TIE, TIE, X-Wing, and Y-Wing) that comes to $65 online (which is still very reasonable by current standards for a complete boardgame with high quality components and seven highly-detailed prepainted minis), so I guess I'm still not seeing the $100. But honestly, since this is like Wings of War (WoW), it's the kind of game where the fewer the ships on the table, the better the game will be. If every player controls two ships each, WoW already becomes nigh unplayable with a ton of downtime between turns. If anyone tries to use this game to recreate the battle of Yavin with like twenty starships, I hope they've got an entire long weekend to burn.

I've found this game to be very tactical, with abilities and synergies very similar to SWM. The dogfighting aspect is so much better than SSB, but then again, most things are. I gave it a shot, and I actually enjoy this game. There are a lot of SWM players that have gotten into this game, and I think so far most of us like it.
The game is only in its infancy right now, like when Rebel Storm came out. It has a lot of growth potential, and so far it looks to me like FFG is doing a good job in developing a good game.
And it is on vassal, fyi.
