After WotC discontinued the game, the core player base set up a player's committee and started releasing Virtual sets, which are new cards for new characters but use proxies for the figures, very similar to what happened with the CCG when it was discontinued. These sets are considered legal in sanctioned play. For casual play, it's all up to the players, but feedback has been generally positive. You can find all but the most recent set in the database here and can get scans of all the cards to print out at http://www.swmresources.com/

A quick note about the design of the Vsets. The Vsets were designed (for the most part) to be on par with WotC's competitive pieces. Of WotC's 800 or so pieces, probably less than 200 would have been considered competitive (i.e. good enough to win a tournament). There are now close to 300 Vset pieces. Probably half or more of them are competitive, so if you randomly mix a few Vset pieces and a few WotC pieces you will notice a considerable difference in power. However, if you are building competitive squads you'll now find a lot (a LOT) more variety. Instead of 200 competitive pieces to work with, there are now close to double that number. In addition, WotC left several factions very weak. Now all of the factions have comparable strength.

Well, I wouldn't say that all of the factions have comparable strength. Vong are still at the bottom of the pile, and I don't think that anyone uses Mandalorians competitively.

Thank you for the replies. I play for fun though, so this doesn't really affect me.
I play Magic: The Gathering competitively. Star Wars Minis are fun to collect, play casually, and use in RPGs/campaigns.
I was looking through the WotC units and it appears they never made a miniature of the Trade Federation AAT [Armored Assault Tank]. That really is too bad. In the Ultimate Missions books they gave you stats for figures they would later print. That was such a waste in my opinion. They could have/should have given us stats for things like the AAT. Did anyone draw up an AAT? Maybe a printable tile for it in a similar top down art style as well?

The Vsets are fun. Interesting mechanisms and representations of characters that WotC never got around to. I just wanted to warn you about the power level - some people have been bothered by it. As far as the AAT - WotC never made one. Someone is currently auctioning a custom of one, though: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Star-Wars-Miniatures-AAT-Battle-Tank-custom-figure-w-card-Ultimate-Missions-/150973666722?pt=Games_US&hash=item2326bb55a2It uses a Galoob figure mounted to a SWM base, plus cards printed out using the Ultimate Missions stats.

You should still try them though, they actually make a good chunk of older figures like Dark Troopers and IG-88 usable now.
