What was it that drew you in?

And then once you played the game, what was it that hooked you? What kept you playing.

The first Star Wars Minis that I got was the Obi Wan/Vader Starter set. I played a game with my brother in law, I lost. But I was blown away by how awesome the game was. I love strategy games, and I love Star Wars, so I was instantly hooked.

The more I got into the game, the more I learned that there was SOOO much to this game. I've been playing since Imp Entanglements and I still don't know everything there is about this game.

What about you?

Back in the summer of 2004 i was living with Timmerb123 and wsa playing a lot of a game called Star Wars Epic Duels. Its a cool little skirmish game where you pick a character who is governed by cards for attacks and dice for movement.

I was making decks to supplement the game with characters from KotOR and other places and I came across the previews for SWM. THe figures were far superior and so when it was released that fall i bought a few boosters to go with some ED decks pulling Mara Jade, Emperor palpatine and a few other pieces as well as having the starter set (farmboy luke).

The figure quality blew me away but Tim was not enthusiastic about playing the game from a fear of getting sucked in.

I played the game against my girlfriend who went Vader/Emperor who decimated my team. I thought "this isn't balanced" so i read the rules further and found out about doors and combined fire.
Managed to sucker in tim to a 3 way (oo-er) where he took tarkin and emperor i took mara, luke and scrubs and Sarah took emperor, probe droid and stuff.

I tried out combining fire and door tricks and managed to take Vader out using my peewees and from that point on i was hooked. Time, much to his chargrin, was also sucked in. I Completed the set and waited impatiently for clone strike.

When clone strike hit it basically started what was a golden age in mini's for me. We had a league set up between 7-8 of us who played a round robin tournament (100pts) where each team you played had to have all new characters. We saw Yoda, han, bob, Ig, sideous, dooku, greedo, aurra sing and all the games were great fun (we had errata'd override so r2 wasn't seen much) and it came down to me (Sideous and dooko +3 ewoks) v TIm (Yoda, aurra and scrubs) in the final.

I went to different stores to play the game and met some awesome people who i'm happy to say are still some of my best friends.

As the sets came out I collected everything. Went to release tourneys, made my first trip to GC in 2006 and won a 7 round tourney. Came 15th 2007, got married 2008 and then won GC in 2009.

Its been a part of my life for almost a decade. The Star wars element got me hooked but the game kept me playing.
The game was never perfect but it was so fun and the huge variety of character kept me playing rabidly.

I went to my lgs back when clone strike had just released. The manager explained the whole game to me knowing i was a huge Star Wars fan. I wasn't sure if I liked it, so he gave me two half price boosters of rebel storm. I pulled boba Fett twice(my bad luck even then) I played a game that week and was hooked. Been playing ever since.

I got into boardgames in 2006. I heard about this game in early 2007 but didn't even consider it based on my gaming budget. In 2009 when IE was the latest set, I got a Borders gift card for my birthday and decided to get a SWM booster to go along with a couple dozen figures I had traded for on boardgamegeek. I pulled Cade Skywalker, BH who was one of the most expensive figures at the time. I found a LGS that had tournaments and attended there for a few months until it shut down. I loved the game but hated how it basically came down to whoever spent the most money wins. I didn't have a large enough collection to have any sort of synergy. I did trade away Cade for a bunch of rares that were more useful to me, and I bought some more figures off ebay so I eventually got some synergy.

The shelves for my boardgames filled up, but I kept my gaming budget the same. So all of a sudden I had a SWM budget since new minis took up so little space. Then the game was canceled and I was able to get several large lots off ebay for cheap. Then Vsets came along and the 'biggest budget wins' problem went away completely. Then the Vsets brought balance to the game so (almost) every faction is viable. After the LGS shut down, I played Vassal leagues for a while. A couple years ago I started playing regularly with a local player so I haven't been on Vassal in a long time.

The new sets, watching the discussions about the meta, and designing/playing linked scenarios for campaigns have been the things that have done the most to keep me in the game.

Eerily similar to me. Although there's no tourny scene here. If you started with RotS I'd wager I'm a year or two older than you, but otherwise sounds just like me. And in my case I got the CS starter from a family friend for a birthday because he liked the sculpts.

Not quite, but my anniversary (Aug 16th) clashes with it almost every year. If i didn't have such an awesome wife you could say it was a faux par.

Awesome story dude! Crying
I have a friend who also started out with Epic Duels. He was so into them, he was buying/printing/making everything he could as far as new cards and such, and played all the time. Then, he had someone ask him, 'have you ever tried Star Wars miniatures?' Well, he'd not. He tried it, and was hooked. Then he showed it to me a couple years ago, and I'm quite addicted myself (if you haven't noticed Flapper). We play pretty regularly still.

But, what KEPT me in the game, despite not playing for awhile, was CUSTOM STATS! Designing was SO fun, and the community was so excepting and merciful while I was learning, loving my customs made with LIMITED game experience. I got better and better, and, well, look now. I won the CCC here on the boards the first two times I entered (second on the third try; a late vote came AFTER the time limit that would have changed things, but it was all fair, just the way things happened, and I loved the winning custom), have released multiple sets, have had CHS123 request my collaborating assistance, have had responses to silly polls about which piece I should make first or last or 40th Flapper.

So, in a sentence, YOU GUYS and custom stats are what really fueled me to stay with the game (and eventually, to start my multi-hundred dollar collection on a whim).

I LOVE being able to creatively make the game your own, and this site enabled it, you guys encouraged it, and it's been a world of fun.

I'm proud of all of them, of course! BigGrin

You probably don't have time to read it all, though, so if you're pressed for time, I'd recommend reading DECEIVED and part 4 of the Clone Wars campaign. Capture and Rescue is my favorite campaign, but those two have the best write-ups (imo).

Capture and Rescue campaign (4 skirmishes):
The capture
The rescue
Flight after rescue
Final confrontation

Rules for the whole campaign

Clone Wars campaign (4 skirmishes):
Part 1: Sabotage
Part 2: Bunker assault
Part 3: Escape after bunker assault
Part 4: Final confrontation (with rules tutorial)

Rules for the campaign

This is probably my favorite stand-alone scenario, though we only played it once. We have to play this one again now that we have Malgus and Shae Vizla.
DECEIVED: Based on the trailer for The Old Republic

I wrote the rules for the massive campaigns we played here on BlooMilk a few months ago:
FORGOTTEN BATTLES of the Clone Wars
BEFORE ENDOR: Rebels vs Imperial leading up to Endor

Those campaigns were a lot of fun. We had 10-20 players per campaign, but virtually none of the designers... they were probably too busy playtesting I'm guessing. Each player played 6 skirmishes, so the whole campaign consisted of 30-60 skirmishes. They were standard games - not scenarios - but each side was severely restricted in what pieces they could use, and the map was pre-selected. The campaigns featured continuity (if a Unique was defeated, that version couldn't be re-used), team play (Dark versus Light where Supreme Commanders for each side allocated pieces to each player), and variety (everyone was forced to use sub-par pieces and together we played on virtually every map available for SWM).

My friend (who oddly didn't even play the game) got me a RotS starter set in 2006, and I started buying boosters every so often and playing games for fun with friends. I didn't realize there was a competitive aspect until another of my friends told me about tournaments at the LGS (this was in late 2008, right after CW), so I played for about six months, but then had to take some time off (due to budget problems). I came back right after Dark Times, only to find that my LGS gaming scene was dying, and the game going extinct. I continued to play till the end, and then packed my minis up and put them away (I thought it was for good). Come late 2010, I'm cruising the forums on here and I see something about new sets, and I think to myself "It's just another joke" (anyone remember shinja's Jedi Civil War set?), but it ends up there are now new cards to print. This had to be one of top five favorite moments in this game's history, I was amazed at the quality of work and the dedication that community members had put in to keeping this game alive. And now it's mid-2013, and I still get a game in every so often, but most of the time I theorycraft, which is fine by me, because although I love this game, I have moved on to other games to pass the time. It has been an amazing journey throughout this game's history, and I'm glad to have played it.

Thanks, V-Set team, for keeping this game fresh and alive for those of us that remain.

Well, for starters it's Star Wars!

Saw episode 4 in the theater as a kid when it first came out, and it was pretty much the coolest thing ever to me at the time.

As far as the game, my son got me into it. He was into card games (Pokemon at first) and would go to the LGS to play (and siphon our wallets to get more stuff ;). At some point, he saw the minis and thought they were cool and got his mom to buy him a couple packs. This was sometime around Alliance and Empire. He watched some games being played and this awesome T.O. guy named Jim Fraser hooked him into playing in tourneys. He got excited about the game and taught me the basics (all he knew anyway) so we could play together at home. He had just enough of a collection to get me intrigued. He was on a mission to get all the big Sith bad guys, and I was like Who are these guys? Mandalorians? Yuuzhan Vong? Anyway, he was beating the tar out of me, since I couldn't make a very good team out of the other stuff he had (and he always played Sith) so I started buying him more boosters than he would have been getting otherwise, lol.

Back to Jim Fraser who, after my son, was the tipping point for me getting sucked in and joining the group at the LGS. I would typically take my son to the to play, and then run errands or catch up on some work at my office a few blocks away. After meeting Jim and some of the others in the group, I discovered that these were the nicest bunch of gamers I had encountered, so I was totally comfortable with that arrangement. But every time I took him to play, Jim would ask when I was going to join in. (he has a way about him that makes it really hard to turn him down after a while).

After I'd played in a couple tourneys, that was it. I started buying boosters for myself and then the collecting bug bit. I found out about the forums from the group, found my way here, started trading, and played at the LGS as often as I could manage. It was a good run through the end of the WotC game but then life got more complicated and I couldn't play much during the time that the group began to waver, and then ultimately fizzle out.

The forums helped fill the void and I found myself getting increasingly involved in the online community. Just as it was with the local guys, the people are as much fun as the game itself. It's the best game I've ever played. I love the depth and flexibility of ways to play, and the community-driven content has kept it fresh and interesting. Doing the stuff I do now is fun for me even though I don't play all that often, and in a way has replaced the collecting aspect (I have everything). I still have plenty to learn about the game so I doubt I'll ever get bored with it.

To sum up, I was hooked by an awesome game and community, and I'm still here for that reason. BlooMilk

I jumped in around Champions of the force. I actually started with the revenge of the sith strarter set. I fell in love with the game mainly because I love Star Wars and loved re-creating my favorite scenes from the movies. I Played more and enojoyed collecting and playing the game. I made the mistake of selling my collection around 5 years ago when my son was only a couple years old. I recently got back in to the game and am starting to build a collection again and sharing this game with my son who now loves this game. ThumpUp

I was in high school when the game first came out, and a friend of mine saw some Rebel Storm boosters at a game store and mentioned them to me. I looked the game up online and it sounded cool and both of us were die hard Star Wars fans, so he and I bought a bunch of boosters and split the contents (he got Imperials, I got Rebels, and we just divvied out the Fringe). I was hooked right away, because I loved strategy video games like Age of Empires and Advance Wars, although I didn't have much experience with board games. We got another mutual friend interested in the game, and basically just the three of us played for a while. I left for college right about when Universe came out so I didn't see those guys too much and didn't play the game at all for a while, then one day I got back onto the WotC boards and saw that a guy was posting about looking for players in my area. I hooked up with him (it was Chuck, for those of you that know him) and it was just him, his son, another friend of theirs, and me for a little while. More people slowly came into the group until we were regularly getting 8-10 players every week to play.

Our group is smaller and we don't play too much anymore, but the people are still my favorite part about the game. Drives to and from events like Regionals and GenCon are a huge draw. I've also met some of my best friends via this game. I'm getting married in February and one of my groomsmen (Greg Sutton) and my best man (Weeks) are both guys I've met through minis. I do love the strategy of the game, and I think that it is a very deep game, and being a designer has absolutely been a highlight of my SWM career, but if I had to pick one think about SWM that has kept me around it has been the people.

I was given an Attack on Endor pack for Christmas in like 2007. My best mate, who is now one of New Zealand's best players, got a pack from the same mutual friend. After a while admiring the sculpts, maps, and scenario book, we eventually both picked up starter packs. I found a store 15 minutes from my house that sold boosters, and I've been buying and receiving minis ever since. A couple of years ago I was introduced to the Save 11 group in New Zealand by Kezzamachine. He is perhaps the coolest guy you could ever meet, and Save 11 is full of awesome guys like him. Everyone is friendly, generous, funny, and just generally great to be around. I've now been to 4 tournaments, and I'm really forward to the next one!

Summary: minis people rule.

Epic Duels was my gateway drug into the world of Minis. This friend who I can proudly say isn't a friend anymore (he was a real piece of work, without going into detail about him), anyways him and I would get together regularly to play star wars epic duels, when one evening he showed me boosters and sculpts from Rebel Storm and said it was some new game. I thought they looked great but didn't get boosters right away as I was broke and was afraid of spending a lot of money on boosters where you only get 7 pieces in a box. Around clone strike, he bought a couple boosters, and invited me over to play. We played a few games, he didn't understand the rules, and we were playing wrong because I was one that just took his word for it. I thought it favored melee way to much to be a great game because (regardless of stealth) he thought you needed to be within 6 to shoot someone and the guns at the time couldn't afford to get that close to Vader. Around the time of Revenge of the Sith I started delving into minis myself as this friendship was falling apart as I learned more about this guy. I figured out we were playing wrong and started buying boosters to try and get ready for a tourney that I was looking for. I met LilyWan and the Niles Il crew online and got together with them and talk about people welcoming you into a group. They were great. I was hooked and was buying every booster I could find. From being with the Niles crew I went to my first Gen Con and met other players. Around the time when Niles was falling out of the scene, I started hanging out and playing with Tim and Deri. Tim and I travel to all kinds of regionals and tourneys together. Like Daniel said, Star Wars got me into the game, but its the people who keep me in it. I can't ever see myself leaving because I have made friends all over, from Jason, Lou, and the rest of the Michigan crew to Gerry in New York, to Tim and the great kids of the Wisconsin Scene keeping the game alive and well. To the Atlanta Crew (who Chicago has dubbed our arch rivals of SWM), great guys, great players, all in good fun. I've helped Playtest vSet pieces, had ideas of mine put in vSet pieces, I've been making customs and prize support for Gen Con and other tournys for the last few years. I love the game, but its the people that I've come to know that keeps me playing and staying involved in the community in trying to keep the game going.

Thank you players of SWM, the last few years have been great, and here's to a few more years.

+1 this is it in a nutshell, SWM players all have Camraderie as a SA. I've been hooked since 77' so this game has been a delight and it's the cast of characters who make it truly special!

One of my favorite video games of all time is Gladius. SWM is basically Gladius with the much added bonus of the star wars universe being %100 cooler. So...obviously I would love a video game like Gladius, but in the SWM theme to be made. I do realize that this is heretical to say since the game is made to interact in person and so many people here really value the friends they have made through it's interaction, but I would still love it.
