I don't know about him, but I am. I actually disagree with a good bit of these "4 simple rules".
All I want from J.J. Abrems is: 1. that he doesn't irrevocably mess up the cannon 2. that he doesn't go over the top with comedy (please no more Jar Jar characters! R2-D2, C3-P0 and Han should be enough for your comic relief) 3. That the story won't have a pathetic ending like the Lost tv series did 4. That he won't ruin star wars by going completely outside the box.

Those are my 4 rules. Will edit if I think of anything else.

There is no emotion, only Peace.

This is pretty much nothing but unabashed and irrational prequel hate. The prequels weren't popular. The idea that everything about them was bad is adolescent nerdrage at its most offputting.

I disagree with point #1, thus the most of the rest of his points fall apart for me. It just reeks of the typical over hatred some have for the prequels. Because the Death Star and Cloud City were sooo frontier and dirty. And that that Ewoks and Jar Jar do not come from the same idea of R2 and Threepio. The reasons I disliked the prequels more than the OT had NOTHING to do with 3/4 of his "points".

If the writing, acting, and direction are all good, you won't care about those points.

But they were in SPACE! That makes it okay, right? And Geonosis was totally civilized and built up. Remember the stonework seats? RollEyes

All true. This link has been circulating a lot, and I think it's silly also. If your problems with the prequels are the things listed here, you are upset about the WRONG things. The reason the prequels were bad was because of shoddy writing and worse acting. Yes, some of the shoddy writing overlaps with the points here, but not entirely.

And you're spot on about Cloud City and the Death Star. Yes, the OT had frontier set pieces like Tatooine, Hoth, Dagobah, and Endor, but also had both Death Stars and Bespin, which are as clean looking as Naboo and Coruscant. Also keep in mind that the prequels did heavily feature Tatooine, Geonosis, and Mustafar throughout the prequel trilogy.

I'm so over Prequel hate. Grow up people.

Like many, I prefer the OT, but the pretend that the OT is somehow perfect is just lame. I can sit here and find just as many nits to pick about those movies as I can about the prequels.

I'm a Star Wars fan. I like Star Wars, not just parts of it. The flaws are part of the charm. I'm not a film critic, and I don't want to be because most of them a w***ers.

I can't wait to go see Episode 7BlooMilk

Just give me an awesome space battle, for crying out loud. No decent space battle in the prequels. The opening to RotS had potential, but had Ani and Obi fighting off buzz droids instead. Nothing beats the Battle of Endor.

I'm glad I'm not crazy and alone in disagreeing with a lot of the points brought up by the video.

As long as they don't just have a row of soldiers running at another row of soldiers shooting at each other then I will enjoy it. That was the only thing I really disliked about the prequels.

There are some good points brought up about the horrible acting and directing and lines in the Prequel Trilogy. "Anakin, you're breaking my heart!" ugh...nuff said.

And I do like a lot of stuff in the PT:
-The lightsaber battles in the PT are choreographed so much better than the battles in the OT. The Vader/Obiwan battle in Ep4 was an utter yawn compared to the Anakin/Obiwan battle in Ep3. There's also the Darth Maul combat scene, which is easily as exciting and memorable as any in the whole series. Then Dooku/Yoda, as well as Anakin/Dooku, Mace/Palpy, etc. The lightsaber battles really turned it up a notch in the PT.
-I remember my emotional reaction (deep sadness and horror) in the movie theater to watching the Order 66 command be carried out in Ep3. That whole section was both evocative and memorable.

However, when I think about the video again, after reading all of the comments posted (either intelligently or not) in this thread about all the ways it is evil and wrong and stupid, I still think the video is right. As I watched the video the first time, I found myself saying, "Yes, I hadn't thought of it this way before, but I think it's right." For all 4 points. Sure, the Death Star is all clean and tidy (and not frontier-esque), but spend a few moments comparing Star Wars to [:shudder:] Star Trek, and you'll see why:

Star Trek: very "modern" (if you're up on that language): technology never fails, human reason and science can solve everything (Mr. Spock, Data).
-Analyze and examine the universe to achieve your greatest potential. In fact, that's why the Starship Enterprise exists.
-Technology always functions properly and is trustworthy, because it is founded on good science and the limitless potential of human reason. The hyperdrive is always in good repair. Technology is a reliable friend.
-The ships are smooth and clean.

Star Wars: very "post-modern": human reason and science are suspect, there is something bigger (the Force) all around us.
-The way to grow is to let go of your thoughts and your conscious self, to trust your feelings, and to let the Force guide you.
-Technology (the fruit and hope of science and human reason) is chronically failing and is completely superceded by the power of the force ("Luke, you've switched off your targeting computer"). The hyperdrive...the darn things are pretty much a plot device. Technology is a threat (Death Star).
-The ships look like they're old, battered, and rusty: "What a piece of junk!"

So basically, I'm saying that the differences between Star Trek and Star Wars (and I could list more) help to illuminate what is "Star Wars" and what is not. Yes, both are space sagas...but there is a vast difference between them. There is something "other" about Star Wars, that Star Trek cannot capture, and never has. And that other-ness (hard to define, but very real), it seems to me, is what makes Star Wars great. That other-ness is the essence of Star Wars. And I think the video at least pointed to that; that's what I saw when I watched the video, and that's why I think the video is right. Sure, there is PT-hate in there...but if you're able to look past that, maybe you'll see that the video is making some valid points.

No offense, but do you actually watch Star Trek? The failures of logic, reason, and technology are actually pretty common themes.

The stuff *usually* works because the ships have a crew in charge of keeping up repairs. The proper comparison for the Enterprise is a Impstar, not the Falcon.

Again, you're confusing your comparisons. There are lots of clean, tidy ships in Star Wars' OT - just take the ships in either fleet, for the most part. Just like there are lots of dirty, rusty ships in Star Trek. I really feel like you haven't popular image. actually watched that much ST and you're making incorrect assumptions based on its i

If you can't even put this "other-ness" into words, then why is it that you are able to point to the video as being able to capture it, to some extent?

Agreed. I thought the RotS space battle was cool but it focused on Ani and Obi trying to get somewhere. There was really nothing riding on the battle as a whole.
