Press Release of figure banning and floor rules changes.
After recent tournaments being held by the SWM community, there has been a growing discontent at the state of the game which has become unbalanced with certain squad builds dominating and removing the playability of a wide range of alternative squad types from the competitive game. It is felt with a growing consensus that the game is shifting towards a more shooter orientated archetype, where in order to compete it is essential to play a squad based around these figures or to play a direct counter. Furthermore, the enjoyment of the game is often hindered by certain figures that force certain playstyles and these are deemed as negative play experiences in the wider community.
The aim of the design team’s efforts on V-set design has always been to produce a wide meta game experience to cater to all kinds of squad archetypes including Jedi rock squad, high activation smash squads, swap squads, large movement squads, denial squads, technical squads, swarm squads and variations within these themes. We feel that all these play styles should be accommodated by the game and design moves forward in a way to attempt to find a place for all these archetypes.
Recently, however, with the imbalance of the game and a growing discontent among players, the V-set team was spurred on to discuss the state of the game and what changes could be made to ensure a more varied and enjoyable experience. As a result of this (and recent tournament results) the Commando Droid Officer (CDO), released in V set 8, was banned from tournament play because it enabled a shooter squad with high activations and an unprecedented amount of movement and attacks that made it difficult for many other squad types to compete. Whereas we feel that the figure may still have a place in the game after some changes, we do not feel we have enough time to playtest and correct the figure adequately to ensure the changes are acceptable before Gen Con, the largest convention applicable to SWM. We do not want to make a change and then have to re-errata the piece later on and so the most concise course of action was decided to be an indefinite ban while we consider possible changes in the future
Other pieces that have been flagged often as contributing to the decline of the variation of squad types in the game include Poggle the Lesser and the Klatooinian Assassin. Poggle has long been a point of contention by players because of the propensity of driving up activations while introducing cheap unavoidable damage against melee pieces opposing them. In the same vein, the Klatooinian Assassin was also highlighted as an issue due to its low cost, cloaked ranged defense, high stats, and self-destruct that make it one of the most powerful non-unique figures in the game. As it is Fringe, this compounds the issue by its access to all factions and presenting many different squads all dominated by its presence. Finally, it is most effective against melee attack Jedi figures because of the Jedi Hatred special ability and the self-destruct on death. We have decided to ban these pieces from competitive play for the same reasons as the CDO, in order to remove them from the competitive sphere while we decide and test suitable errata.
Finally, it has long been felt by a growing group of players that the Ysalamiri special ability was too prohibitive to Jedi pieces. Not only does the ability prevent the spending of Force points within its effective range and prevents figures within the from being affected from within the “bubble”, with its current wording it also prevents force users nowhere near the “bubble” from responding to attacks originating from within the “bubble”. Force users make up a large part of the Star Wars universe and being unable to defend from attacks from the other side of the battle map prevents engagement and puts these figures at a disadvantage. With Ysalamiri now prevalent in 2 factions, it was decided that Jedi should at least be able to respond to attacks with Force so long as they are not in the Ysalamiri “bubble”. This is a change that returns back to how the ability was ruled in 2006, with the additional specification that you cannot use Force to affect figures within the bubble. The hope is that Jedi become more attractive to play and open up the Meta to a more diverse field.
These changes are effective immediately (6/4/2015). However, it is up to the Tournament Organizer of the upcoming regional tournaments before Gen Con whether to enforce the changes because of the short time to prepare. All these changes will be enforced at Gen Con.
Regards V-set Design Team

FYI, Ysalimari wasn't changed back to the old wording. It has new wording, with some new interactions.
