Set vs Set Squadbuilding Contest

Inspired by the "mono set" question, here's a squadbuilding contest. Urbanjedi has agreed to provide a prize to the winner, and credit goes to him for the idea. Not sure what the prize will be, though.

Rules for Sign-up and Squadbuilding:

For each set, one person will build a squad using pieces only from that set. Squads must follow normal squadbuilding rules (i.e. choose a faction).

When you sign up, choose an available set. Post a squad that contains only pieces from that set. Just post here in this thread. Paste in your squad and provide a link to it. Please take discussion about squads to the respective squad pages to keep clutter out of this thread.

Sign up is first-come, first-served. Once a person posts a squad for a set, no one else can use that set. No reservations... if you have your squad "almost built" and someone else posts a squad for that set, choose a new set.

Players signing up earlier have the advantage of choosing the stronger sets. Players signing up later have the advantage of seeing the squads of potential opponents in order to build "hate squads" against them.

After 3 days, players who have signed up for one set may sign up for a additional sets if they wish, following the same rules as above. Players who post a 2nd squad must wait 24 hours to post a 3rd, then another 24 hours for a 4th, etc. Players continue posting squads until all sets are claimed.

Running the Contest:

All squads will be placed into a single-elimination bracket. For a "game", instead of an actual game, both players will make their case for why their squad would win against the other. The community will vote. Winner (based on community vote) advances.

List of sets:
There are a total of 26 slots, so a maximum of 26 contestants. Though I'm kind of expecting about 10-12 entrants, with most people taking 2 or 3 sets. As people claim their sets, I will mark it here.

(Scenarios, etc. are paired with a related release. Sets that are only reprints are not included. Epics, BHC, and AT-AT excluded.)

At 3:00pm EST on December 6, players may start claiming more than 1 set, but you must wait 24 hours between claiming sets.

The Bracket
Here is the bracket. Seeds were assigned randomly (with no distinction between Vset and WotC). There are 26 sets, which is not a power of 2, so 6 sets received byes into the 2nd round.

I feel bad taking this, as you could make a really good Rebel squad out of Imperial Entanglements as well. There's obviously some sub-optimal synergies - Thrawn and Dash aren't that great together, you're reliant on Mice for Swap, activations are low, and Vader and Arica aren't that great together either. But most of these pieces are individually pretty good, and you get override. The later WOTC sets that focus on two factions are rich pickings - kind of regretting not taking Clone Wars. Also regret not looking at the brackets before choosing - second round matchup against Galaxy at War isn't ideal.

--Imperial Imperial Entanglements--
71 Darth Vader, Legacy of the Force
32 Thrawn (Mitth'raw'nuruodo)
31 Arica
28 Dash Rendar, Renegade Smuggler
15 Lobot, Computer Liaison Officer
5 Imperial Dignitary
5 Stormtrooper
12 Mouse Droid x4

(199pts. 11 activations)

I want to put in an entry, too, but I'll take one of the least popular sets around:
--Set vs Set: Masters of the Force--
65 Master Windu
42 Kit Fisto, Jedi Master
80 Chiss Trooper x5
13 Gamorrean Bodyguard

(200pts. 8 activations)

Not a lot to pick from there. Two melee beatsticks with some mediocre shooters. Hopefully the bodyguard can keep Windu alive long enough to be useful. No door control at all.

I'll take Scum and Villany

44 Zam-BH
42 General G, HoH
28 Shada Dukal
16 BX Spotter
45 BX Sniper x3
15 Veteran Ugnaught
10 Squib Trader

General Grevious runs melee interference, you have the Spotter to provide shielding to your pieces with Shada to sponge some of the damage that the Shield or the Snipers end up taking. Zam with Auto-Damage and 70 potential is scary good. Veteran Uggie can shatterbeam doors and repair the BX's and the General.

Darn spry beat me too it haha I was going to rock that exact squad. Even had it written up but I guess I will go with:

Command of the Galaxy + Vehicles of War

--Separatist Movement--
63 Grievous on Tsmeu-6 Wheel Bike
56 Durge on Speeder
35 Asajj Ventress, Nightsister
32 Talon Karrde, Information Broker
13 Todo 360

(199pts. 5 activations)

Durge and Grievous strafe everything with melee or ranged, can dismount against buzz droids. Talon gives his disruptive bubble, Asajj is a deep strike commander killer and Todo handles the doors

Galactic Heroes + Old Republic

54 Caedus-Sith Lord
49 Juggernaut
40 Imperial Agent
31 Kaliyo Djannis
26 Khem Val

So Caedus can move everyone around, the Juggernaut can Draw Fire/Take Damage from Caedus, The Agent is a dangerous shooter and with Kaliyo along with him she becomes nasty and shuts down your CE's. Khem Val simply beats stuff up.

I'll go for a unused older set that most of the pieces have seen some competitive play. And it has the most annoying piece in the history of the game so......good luck with that. BigGrin

Here is my Knights of the Old Republic set squad:

--Its a Ciesta in every single byte!--
23 Captain Panaka
20 Captain Tarpals
36 Gungan Shieldbearer x2
18 Jar Jar Binks
17 T3-M4
77 Gungan Artillerist x7
9 Gungan Soldier

(200pts. 14 activations)

A bit of a play on words for the title of the squad. It came from a old radio commercial jingle in the early 90's that I remember down to this day for some kind of mexican food. "Its a Siesta in every single bite" was how it went. Anywho........down to the frijoles of this here bamba squad shall we? Tongue

Tarpals gives double Cestas and double Atatls to the gungans and it makes for some decent crowd control, preventing people from grouping together, and in some maps it might not be so easy to avoid being so close. Long distance double cesta's are still competitive, and with the prevelance of shooters, Gungan Shield Bearers are quite good still. Jar Jar is annoying as ever, drawing fire from accurate shooters and melee and making them hit themselves or other allies with bombad Gungan. Panaka is mostly there for his 70HP and Bodguard to protect the Shield Bearers and T3 (and yes even Jar Jar), but his swap CE could still be a little nice as a small movement breaker. It has a lot of activations and can take care of other peoples swarms and droid squads. Door control via T3 for override and his Flamethrower could come in handy also.

--Destiny of the Force--
62 Darth Revan, Sith Lord
38 Jodo Kast
27 Darth Bandon
24 Sith Inquisitor
21 Han Solo, Gambler
14 Exar Kun, Dark Force Spirit
8 Nikto Pirate
5 Salacious Crumb

(199pts. 8 activations)

Kind of a jumble, but I wanted Revan. Two decent shooters and a decent beatstick to go with Revan as well as the possibility of taking over enemy characters with the Sith Inquisitor.

Clone Wars and Shadows are still available, right? They both have a few amazing squads available - ERCs, GGDAC with IG86 and Lancer, GOWK/Yobuck/Rex, KBSV swarm.

Edit: jak got in while I was typing.

Atton gives me door control. Kavar is a Swiss blade + CE gives my Gunners bonuses. Admiral gives them more bonuses. Brianna is another greater mobile shooter along with Atton.

The contest is part squadbuilding and part sales. Convince people that your squad is better than your opponent's squad. One way to do that would be to actually play a game and see what the result is. You could do a solo playthrough or actually play your opponent. You can just report the results as a datapoint and let people vote, or if both players agree then you can have the game winner advance in the bracket. I didn't want to see the contest grind to a halt, though, if people don't find time to coordinate schedules and play the games. That's why just describing how you think the game would play out would suffice.

I just saw that UrbanShmi and urbanjedi are facing each other in the first round. Since they live together, the chances of seeing that game actually played goes up considerably. Not a requirement, but it would be awesome to see.

We're now at 14 entries, so not everyone will get a 2nd set. Still possible that we get 26 different contestants so nobody gets a 2nd entry.
