Well, tomorrow can't come soon enough!
Tomorrow is the seventh edition of New Zealand's second biggest Major Tournament, LowerHuttaCon! This 14th of July, we will continue the resurgence of the New Zealand SWM season with what has often been our biggest Regional before the return of the New Zealand's SWM Nationals. We currently have roughly 10 or so individuals lined up including possibly four of New Zealand's five International Hall of Famers, and potentially four of LowerHuttaCon's five past winners, and hopefully three of New Zealand's four Moores. We kick off about 10am NZ time and will give you as many details and updates as we can.
Past winners: 2011 Aaron/Sharron 2012 Graham/theHutts 2013 Dave/Dr. Daman 2014 Dave/Dr. Daman 2015 Paul/Darth Moore 2016 Mike/Mike Smuggler 2017 ...?
I just cannot wait! Now... to find a squad...

Before today's event, it's worth having a look at the current NZ Rankings:
1. Mike 268 pts (6-1) 84% wght 2. Aaron 233 pts (5-1) 100% wght 3. Graham 231 pts (6-2) 90% wght 4. Paul 193 pts (4-2) 94% wght 5. Joe 192 pts (4-2) 75% wght 6. Kezza 158 pts (4-4) 95% wght 7. Ian 120 pts (2-3) 92% wght 8. Daman 120 pts (2-1) 100% wght 9. Yan 120 pts (2-2) 100% wght 10. Hone 105 pts (2-3) 92% wght 11. Hayden 100 pts (1-4) 100% wght 12. Sam 70 pts (4-5) 70% wght 13. AlexCR 69 pts (2-5) 79% wght 14. Josh 62 pts (3-2) 39% wght 15. Rich 60 pts (1-2) 100% wght 16. Stu 60 pts (1-2) 100% wght 17. Will 52 pts (2-4) 74% wght 18. Brody 49 pts (1-1) 62% wght 19. PaulMat 8 pts (1-3) 43% wght 20. Nick 0 pts (0-3) 60% wght 21. BenY 0 pts (0-2) 9% wght
(The Win-Loss numbers are from the past 12 months of games, and the % wght is the weighting of their score - while its 100%, their score is full and from the last 6 months, but as it deteriorates over the next 6 months and tends towards zero, the weighting decreases)

This round is pretty nuts and should be fun. Quinlan grabbing some Opportunist for a possible Assassin, Opportunist, Momentum GMA Double attack haha +12 attack and +30 damage). better keep R2 alive. Serra's acrobatics might be huge as well. I wish I could watch.

I'm awake early and wanted to share some of my thoughts on LowerHuttACon.
If you look at our tournament history, New Zealand's had a reputation for not running strafe much - Tim Ballard has pointed this out before, especially when Daala was running riot. Yesterday we had three players running Luke and Leia on Speeder, which was very unusual, and there weren't really any swarms in the field. The three players who used the Speeder, Joseph and Mike (who played the final at last year's LowerHuttACon) and myself went 5-5 in pool play (if you take out the byes), so you could argue that the meta didn't suit it, or that we're just not that good at playing strafe.
Two of my games were reasonably straightforward. The Commandos and GOWK made a few mistakes and gave me R2 and Rex early, although they did get to 100 points by killing Crix and the Speeder and getting gambit. The Rogue One squad had little answer to strafe, and even though it has crazy movement tricks doesn't have much damage, especially as I knocked out Cassian early. As playing Daman's Thrawn Swap twice made me appreciate, it's way, way tougher IMO being the out-activated player. If you're the out-activating player you get to make all your decisions later and feed off the other player's mistakes.
Hayden's Fringe squad was a lot closer than the scoreline made it look. Basically he moved Talon near my guys at the start of the round in anticipation that I was going to blow the door and get in on his squad. This left Talon exposed and Kyle was able to get next to him and kill him with Lightsaber +10 needing 2s. But then Kyle, who's really my squad's big damage dealer was exposed, and died quickly. I then miscalculated with Luke - I thought Embo had 80 hit points and strafed so I ended next to Embo and could get a second shot on him, but turns out he had 90. I moved Crix up to protect Luke from Embo's overwhelming, but Embo went after Crix instead, so I lost Crix as well, which meant I'd lost a lot of damage output. Jan Ors missed a lot of shots too - she needed 9s on Morrigan, and missed 7 of the first 8, where you'd expect her to land 4 or 5. I was able to close it out, but it was a lot closer than it looked from the score.
After pool play we were looking up the floor rules to seperate Paul and I into 3rd and 4th, as we were both equal on everything (both had 3 three point wins) and we had to delve into Strength of Schedule. I think we got down to the 6th tie breaker rule to figure out Paul was 3rd and I was 4th.
I played Daman's Imperial squad twice, once in pool play and once in the semis. It's very tough, as Daman's expert with that squad, and it handily outactivates mine. Both times I bought in Ree Yees and a Killik with Lobot - I figured Ree Yees would give me a shot at mowing down Cad Bane or Morrigan with the Speeder if I could steal init. In hindsight I played it wrong - my squad has things that can give him issues with disruptive and evade, but I probably should have bought in a bunch of activations with Lobot. The issue I had was that I had very little disposable fodder bringing in Ree Yees - I should have had a Rodian Brute instead of the Mouse in my base squad, and I should have used Dodonna as a meatshield instead of hiding him out back. But the way I had it, I started losing vital pieces almost immediately in both games. It's still tough being outactivated, and at the mercy of Daman who's expert with his squad, but having more fodder would have helped.
I've never thought about it before, but after playing it, I don't mind suppressive fire being unavoidable, but it's pretty harsh how it stops CEs for the rest of the round - so after Luke and Leia were tapped by Morrigan, they didn't have evade against Cad Bane.
It was a really fun day - thanks to everyone who turned up, and thanks Kezzamachine for organising it.
