I have a friend whose birthday is coming up, and he will finally be getting his first minis: a starter. I was thinking of getting a booster for him to expand on that. KOTOR is the better set, but he may be left with a lot of unplayable factions. A&E isn't as good as a whole, but he would probably be getting more Imperials and Rebels, which are in the starter.
The question is:

Should I go KOTOR and risk him having 1 OR, 1 Sith, One Republic LOL, etc.

Or should I get A&E and risk him getting disappointed but with playable factions.

Bear in mind my collection, too

Thanks in advance, I'll keep you all posted on what happens.

I know his parents are getting him the starter, and 2 starters would suck!

as much as I dislike the set, IE would be good for rebels and imperials. If he got thrawn or Palps or Luke or Riekan, he would undoubtedly have good starter teams.

My LGS only has KOTOR, A&E, a Starship Battles Starter, and a CS missions book, so those are the only options.Sad

Then I'd probably pick him a box of A+E. There were some good figs in that set. Even though I hate square bases.

I would also probably go with A&E. If I could choose another, I would go with any of the last 3 sets that have just recently come out: Jedi Academy, Imperial Entanglments, and Clone Wars are all great.

You can always order online, but then again, you have to pay for shipping, and you have to wait. It's also great to support your Local Game Store. Maybe you could also talk to the owner about getting some more sets.

For some reason the square bases make me think of episode 4.

I would go with KOTOR. I understand fully what your saying about the different fractions he might get. However there are much more powerful people in this set, and if he's able to pull a good rare, it could vary well change his mind about what fractions he would like to collect. Even if he gets a AE booster he isn't in a starter and a booster going to have a very good team, with only one of each. WHy not instead give him a choice of what fraction he would like to build his team around. He might like the sith, old republic, or mandao's even more then he does the empire or rebels.

Go with Legacy, the older sets don't have a lot of playable pieces, The Force Unleashed would also be a good set, Kotor would be good, but the factions in that set are kind of tough to collect. Legacy is pretty balanced, and the pieces are decent. At the very least, he will most likely pull something good that can be traded.

I'm buying the booster in about 4 hours from Iconix, which is my online LGS. The nearest physical store that sells SWM is about 4 hours drive, so I have to buy online, and only Iconix arrives on time. I'll probably get A&E, but there's still time to vote otherwise...

I'd say A&E, particularly if it is the older starter. There are plenty of pieces that are usable to make decent beginner squads.

I would also say A&E. It has a nice set of Rs and VRs and have good pieces for Rebels and Imps.
