Hey, all. This isn't aimed at anyone in particular. Quick lesson on punctuation. An apostrophe is never used to make a word plural. No exceptions. Looking at the topics in the general section I see the words "era's" and "Rogue's". The plural of era is just eras. The plural of rogue is just rogues. Some people think that to make an acronym plural, like DVD or VCR you use an apostrophe. Not true. The plurals are DVDs and VCRs. If you have this rule down then you have a majority of punctuation problems licked! A moron that writes well looks smart, and a genius that writes poorly looks unintelligent. Know how they say wearing vertical stripes is slimming? Mastering this simple rule will do the same thing for how you look in e-mails and other written communications. It adds 5 or 10 points to your IQ overnight! Thanks.

It always makes me shudder when I see it listed as Renegades and Rogue's. "Rogue's what? Her bra? And who is the renegade, Gambit?"

I am guilty of perpetrating this and other grammatical atrocities from time to time.

I find the long paragraphs with little use of punctuation and random use of capitals to be far more annoying.

what about "that's" .... RULE EXCEPTION!! or its vs it's :D
And if we're on the topic of grammar/punctuation/etc what about proper capitalization and the use of paragraphs to separate ideas? Nothing is harder to read than a long sting of un-capitalized sentences in one giant block.

You'd hate American History or reading the Constitution, then; those Colonial-Age paragraphs go on forever! More often than not, a half-page paragraph will be two sentences! I think you'd also hate the German language, because they've decided that it's correct to randomly capitalize certain nouns in their sentences (no offense intended toward Germans, just good humor). Ruhk wrote:what about "that's" .... RULE EXCEPTION!! or its vs it's :D Umm... I hope you're joking, because there's no "rule exception" here; "that's" isn't plural. It's a contraction of "that" and "is." Also, just to clarify, "it's" is a contraction of "it is," and "its" is possessive, not the other way around. Another lesson: sentences never start with "and," "but," "so," nor any other conjunction, nor with a preposition, unless the preposition starts a dependent clause at the beginning of the sentence. Example: Of the minis I have, that one is the coolest. Thanks for posting this by the way, bkchi. Not many things annoy me more than poor grammar (you're not doing good, you're doing well!) and poor punctuation ; I don't own a cell phone but, if I did, I would text in full sentences... with punctuation (*gasp*).

Thanks for the support, guys. I thought for sure I'd get roasted for this one. Keep an eye out for my continuing Unwelcome Education series where I discuss the differences between to/too/two, there/their/they're, whose/who's, and its/it's! I may even throw in some Spanish and discuss to/too/two/tú/tu (and Usted). Don't ask me what vosotros means, I never learned.

bkchi wrote:Don't ask me what vosotros means, I never learned. "Vosotros" is used like "ustedes." However, this form is primarily only used in Spain. [I took Spanish the past 3 years in high school (unfortunately I didn't have enough room in my schedule for a 4th year this year), and my most recent teacher was actually from Argentina, which was pretty cool.]

I used to be required to write monthly reports for my Youth Work job relating things to the board of the Church. My shining glory, however, came when I wrote a full-page report that had no punctuation whatsoever... just one long as sentence. They never asked for another report...

I got a few about designated hitters, Spanish fishing policy, and some of the AA.org board members.

Germans capitalize ALL nouns, which means I have had to devote whole lessons to games such as "spot the noun" while teaching English here. Also, one of the funniest examples of doing well vs. doing good is in 30 Rock when Tracy Jordan meets Harvard guy, I don't know how to spell his name. Tracy: How are you? Harvard: I'm doing good (in an attempt to belittle Tracy) Tracy: No. Superman does good. You are doing well. You should brush up on your grammar. Makes me laugh to this day. And is much funnier in the show than written in a forum.

The reasons Germans do this is to differentiate between the noun, verb, adverb and adjectival versions of words which can sometimes all be spelt the same but have very fine differences in meaning. Having said that, they do have very long sentences and I have sometimes seen 1 paragraph per page, said paragraph containing only 3 sentences! I also had to translate a sentence recently consisting of 35 words and only one of them was a verb...and it was "is"! It is a very technical language but also a very accurate language which makes it quite difficult sometimes for us English speakers. Luckily they use a lot of English when playing SWMinis lol.

I don't think I've ever seen actual "spam" here, which frankly is a bit surprising.
