Destiny of the force is legal for regionals and gencon. As far as tournaments go, it's up to whoevers running it.

Bounty Hunters. While the Bounty Hunter era was pretty good, it was the start of a downslide in terms of design.

agreed with Sithborg, but I'm also going to add CoTF helped boost the change of the game.

It seems like there was quite a bit of change around Clone Wars - getting GOWK, Lancer, GGDAC, Yobuck, IG-86, and Captain Rex all around the same time must have shaken the meta up quite a bit.

Not really. Bounty Hunters was were Twin was introduced, not to mention most also had Mobile. Were Evade was starting to be handed out. As much as people complain about the Double/Twin/GMA/Evade pieces, it is really just a logical extension of what Rob started in Bounty Hunters. COTF started the recosting of Melee, thanks to a mistake.

Was the problem just that JWMs were supposed to be unique? They seem comparable to, but maybe a little stronger than, Depa Billaba from the same set.

It was supposed to be Cin Dralig but when they realized they had too many Uniques they just changed the name to Jedi Weapon Master and removed Unique without restating/recosting the figure. One of the biggest screwups, IMO.

They should have left him in as unique and taken out one of the less essential uniques; such as the non-unique Rs (just switch them to U/C) or figures like Bariss Offee

I disagree. While the JWM did obsolete most earlier melee pieces, it forced all subsequent melee pieces to be costed compared to the JWM, thus bringing melee up to par with shooters in competitive play.

I'm going to cast my vote for LotF, the first 10-faction set. Although WotC sort of did a 180 with CLONE WARS (quite possibly instigated by LFL), Legacy of the Force and KotOR marked (to me, at least) a renaissance where it appeared that WotC was trying to undo some of the inequalities that had cropped up in the game during the first 7 or 8 sets.

I think an argument could be made for KotOR, as well. The inclusion of NR Wedge was the start of the "Rise of the Super-Commanders" (affordable or even cheap, faction-shaping, non-beatstick, practically auto-include commanders; eg, Wedge, Rieekan, Whorm...).

You basically just stated the reasons why it was a huge screwup. It obsoleted or at least made a vast majority of pieces non desirable to play, as well as the future recosting of melee. Melee wasn't at any horrific disadvantage at the time. To be honest everythings cost became seemingly lower or very competitive with what they offered at such prices. In a collectible game its expected to a degree, but it happened much sooner than it needed to. The game was plenty playable to that point.

But I'd have to say with actual sets aside, I think Gambit is what changed the game the most.

Actually, it was. With the combo of Aurra Sing and Boba Fett (with R2 to help) combined with wide, open maps like Geonosis and Mustafar maps, melee units just got routinely torn to shreds in competitive play. It also didn't help that the only defenses most melee units from that era had were HP and defense against other melee units. At that point, out of the 80 minis with Melee Attack, only 10 had Deflect/Reflect, 8 had Stealth, and none had evade meaning that if a decent shooter drew a bead to them, they were dead.

Really, the primary reason melee units were fielded back then was to act as meatshields for shooters.

Don't forget HAL. Not many Melee figs could survive 2 40 Dam shots from Aurra.

I know many SWM acronyms, but this one stumps me. Who/What's "HAL"?
