I think SMS is fine as is. I think it is nice having GOWK back in the game.
I am more interested in Flyingarrow's comments about the game becoming more about luck than skill. GOWK has been debated to death, but a shift to more luck based abilities is something that probably needs discussing. Such as that black ops ability which makes you roll a save 11 to see if you can even attack. I like it and see the ways around it, but I can see why people see it as too luck based.

I was always so frustrated that WotC changed the way SSM worked... the thing that made GOWK hard to hit was always MOTF 2 and Mettle (and continues to be) in addition to his SSM.
It wasn't WotC that changed it, it was the players committee, and only for sanctioned play. The original change was made in the actual DCI Floor Rules. While, yes, it was a player volunteering who made it, it was WOTC who approved it.

Ah, I was incorrectly remembering that the change was made after WotC dumped the game, not before.

Ah, I was incorrectly remembering that the change was made after WotC dumped the game, not before. To be fair, I think the decision to drop the license was already made before the DCI update went live.

Although not a panacea to GOWK, I have noticed that we still haven't seen Sonic Weapon in any form. On a formidable non-melee piece or a well-priced Fringe tech piece that could give it out (a la Squib Trader, Rodian Trader, etc), it could help a bit.

I don't think that GOWK should be banned or changed, other than to up the cost, maybe. I'd say that 60-67 would make him a bit more fair.

I don't see GOWK as a game killer. Make a counter or two to keep GOWK players honest and call it a day. This game, like all customizable games I've played has an ebb and flow to it. Melee is up, Melee is down. GOWK is up, GOWK is down. It keeps things interesting.

They have said in the past and i expect that they will keep with it, that they will not change any WOTC pieces, Through erratas or point cost changes. IF a change is made, And i am against it, i believe that it will come from Soresu mastery being changed again.

CerousMutor wrote:Thats the point though. He doesnt need 'nerfed'. Why would you want to totally null a character?? Lol you must have been baly beaten by Obi-Wan! I feel your pain but SS/SSM is not broken. Its the mettle point of him that is bent a bit! This style also stops that too. GOWK doesnt need a silver bullet because he is not waging waste to every minis board out there If he causes you so much pain just play vong squads or direct damage squads! There are plenty more minis out there that are more intimidating than the GOWK. Yes he got some help in this set, but so did Luke, Leia, Han, the Mandos, Sith. Back to a style that helps tone it down. I dont think 'styles', 'Force powers' and 'abilities' should have direct nullifying counters other wise you may as well just play with the Rebel Storm and Clone Strike sets and nothing else! This is a game of chance and skill, a tough nut to balance but Trakata fits those, props to AndyHatton, Lord Ball & Saber1 for helping with it. Its now available at all good custom character creators'. I would want to totally a null a character with a silver bullet if the choice was between that and a ban or an errata. I don't think GOWK requires any of those right now, though.

Sonic Attack is not useless, but the character with it is.

Sonic Attack is not useless, but the character with it is. +1 I'd like to see it show up on some new characters that can actually make use of it.

Even on a character with identical stats and abilities, but Fringe, it would be potentially useful (or even maybe overpowered).

A 9 point fringe character with that Ability that lasted until the end of the round would be a really strong Lobot option. What's even the point of it lasting until the end of the turn - just so they can't deflect the attack if it does hit?

They also wouldn't be able to reroll saves, and if you kill them with the attack, abilities like Force Spirit and Force Detonate won't trigger. Also, it can lock down a force user when based, as if they try to move away to go after a higher priority target, they'll lose the force from the AoO (as the attack does not even need to hit to trigger). Still, for the ability to be effective, it needs to be placed on a mini that doesn't suck.

Tensor Rifle Upgrade: (non-melee allies that do exactly 10 damage within 6 squares gain Sonic Attack. (A generalization of the ability granted but allows the ability to be transferred to useful pieces.)

Here are some options:
Zam Wessell, Bounty Hunter Morrigan Korrde Mando Training Sergeant Jedi Infiltrator
There are a lot more in sets 3 and 4 that can mess with GOWK. They just have to be discovered. :)
