It'll be interesting to see if "squad-shaming" will have an effect. I think the nastiest three squads are Daala, Blast Bug swarms, and Thrawn, but I'm not sure if any will show up in force with the threat of squad-shaming around. Same deal with the Republic double reserves and MTB squad that won a Regional recently.
I also think Seps are a bit crappy without 2 point pieces - eg. why play Durge when you can play Luke and Leia on Speeder with better supporting tech (eg board wide evade). Hmm.. People are actually afraid of squad shaming? That seems a tad sad. People should bring whatever, I can see having more fun at regionals and things but gencon is totally different. It should be expected to play anything and everything to win

Afterwards maybe there can be a discussion on the power level or design of certain pieces and how they fit into squads, but play to win.

Will probably be the more fun event. I am planning on gencon 2018 and want to play competitive, casual, and whatever else is available haha. So I can get a taste of it all haha

Thought I'd revisit last year's top 8.
1. TimmerB - Les Femmes Fatale. (Imp badass swapping ladies) 2. Lou - Cin/Serra, Quinlan, Gen Sky guy 3. Bryan H - Vongalicious. 4. TJ - Sithy Caedus ghosty stuff (little different than last year) 5. Jason K - Skybuck 6. Trevor P - Rebel uniques (LL speeder and Hansicle) 7. Mike G - vong nastiness 8. Randy - Daala, Storm Commandos, dignitaries
Trevor beats Bryan
Mike beats Lou

That would be great if you could come! Try and drag Trevor and Bronson there to! There is a ton of casual events, the biggest one may be the mystery map, or possibly the team tournament.

I am shooting for 2018 as well! I am also going to participate in competitive and casual, but I am looking forward to the casual playing mostly. Being able to play for fun and hang with the SWM community in brother and sisterhood is what I go to GenCon for, rather than the stiff, intense, cheesy environment ( Vong Blast Bug squads, etc. ) that is seen in championship play.

I predict
17 overpowered and/or NPE squads 1 fun and fairly balanced squad that is still strong enough to compete
But everyone will disagree about which one squad falls into that last category.

I think the list of candidates for that title is pretty short: * TINT - only 2 time GenCon winner * Jason - absolutely DOMINATED regionals the past 2 years * Timmerb - in the past has dominated regionals nearly as much as Jason did the past two years * billiv - made gencon top 8 every year he entered up until 2 years ago * Dean - was the top-rated player during WotC's days I guess you could, of course, include every GenCon winner in the debate, too, but I think you could make the best case for one of those 5.

Trevor, also had a hand in Week's, championship Mando squad, "Movin' Mandos", as the designer of the squad, in which Weeks ran and trained with TINT, leading up to GenCon that year, when he couldn't attend GenCon. If Trevor had attended every year, he probably would have at least 2 more GenCon victories. I believe that even in some years when he did attend GenCon, that he didn't even compete in the champs. The statistic that I would love to read/see is Trevor's record in SWM champ events that he has participated in and won, vs in which he has lost. I'm willing to bet, that it is an astonishing and remarkable record, one that he could only answer. Either way, IMHO, he is hands down the greatest!! Billiv is second, but still doesn't come close

That you didn't mention him shows how easy it is to overlook people. Phillip Carlisle was seriously great until he stopped playing when he went off to college. In the era of large fields of players, I remember in the champs and Jedi Challenge at one point he was like 15-2. Could really play Rebels. Nate from W. Lafayette was a top player as well.

Will this be the year Jason gets on the books as SWM champ? Odds are that he does win this year. What do you guys think?

Last year saw a field of 12 I think, during a normal year I don't think Jason or Trevor had enough points from Swiss to finish top 8. They both ended in the finals

Than when the playoffs hit teams are way different and it comes down to "road to the finals" and match ups
