It actually created a divergent timeline, it didn't erase the OS.

I enjoy Star Wars even if its bad. But I think it's CGI that ruined it. If you ever watch commentaries on the OT, they constantly talk about the logistical problems of certain scenes so the story was altered to make it work, or there was trick photography. But with all the CGI of the PT nothing was impossible, so Lucas went nuts, because nothing was beyond the capability of CGI. Star Wars was great cause budgets were low, and technology was poor. It invited the audience to use there imagination, rather then cramming it down their throat with CGI.
On a side note joss whedons Firefly was closer the the spirit of the OT than anything since. But it's still enjoyable. That being said I would love to see some of the cast of firefly get roles in the new Star Wars movie:) cause I don't think firefly will ever come back.
