correct me if i am wrong but what it sounds like is people are giving squads a high rating just based on what particular characters are in the squad.
i dont mean any kind of dis respect here but if your going to give a squad a high rating based on that alone and without even play testing the squad first as the creator of the squad or someone that seen the squad and wanted to try it out for themselves, well then you really shouldnt be rating squads in the first place.
to rate a squad based on the look of it is complete ignorance, thats like me telling someone i dont like chocolate ice cream, and they ask me if i have ever tasted it and i tell them no, well how do you know if you dont try it.
so what happens if i borrow a squad idea from one of you and i think that it "looks" like a tough squad and i go play it in a tournament and my opponent destroys me?
do i man up and blame myself for not playing the squad correctly? or do i do the thing that a sore loser would do and blame everyone but myself?

I still think there will be 1's and 10's flying around that aren't warranted. There are people with personal vendettas, both good and bad ones, emotion will always have a place in rating something. Say some dude loves Revan, so he rates any Revan squad a "10", no matter what the rest of the squad is. I don't see how you can change people. The opposite applies as well say a Yoda hater comes through, and rates any Yodabuck squad a one, just because they hate Yoda, he even puts in the comment box, he hates Yoda, it doesn't change the rating. I would say the same thing for certain posters, if that poster makes a squad he can be rated by the way he is precieved as a poster and player. The Mr. Nice guy gets 10's and can do no wrong, and the unliked know-it-all gets 1's even when it could be the latest gencon Winner.

One ranking for competitiveness and one ranking for fun.

And all ratings given should be public, with the ability to look up who ranked it how, and what other squads they've ranked, and how they've ranked those. Because number systems are generally less useful when you have no reference for how someone rates an intangible like 'fun'. Competitiveness is a little more straight forward, but if 12 people who don't actually play competitively judge it a 10 and one person who is competitive judges it a 1, that doesn't really work either.

In MechWarrior there was a unit which many people hated because it was a slow, melee-only piece. It frequently got ranked low. I figured out how to use it in a way that would allow it to slaughter units worth twice its point value in two turns. Obviously, I ranked it high. But if you knew my play style you'd also know that I went for high risk/high reward style play. Play that leaned a bit more toward 'fun' over 'competitive'.

On Youtube, you can favorite a video that you liked. Perhaps, bloomilk needs a "favorite" button? It would be a good way of seeing what prominent members liked. Plus, it's another easy metric for evaluating squads.
