I had an awesome time at GenCon this year. I drove from Pa, picked up Grand Admiral in Ohio, and we split the cost of a room and parking for 3 days. I am blue collar guys, with 2 of my 3 kids in college. I don't have an inexhaustible supply of disposable income, yet I was able to do it. Grand Admiral is in the same line of work as Billiv, and he was able to as well. Additionally I came a greater distance than most. I won't say it was easy...already I'm saving for next year. You CAN do it if you really want to. And Zalkrie, it would be awesome if you could go next year with me. We geezers would have a blast...drinking diet soda and staying out until 8:30! Apart from the experience and meeting and playing some great players, I really believe I came away as a better player. Billiv could probably give you the best tips and tricks, but if you want a rookie's viewpoint, feel free to PM me. and, oh yeah...the night at Hooters where most of the customers were Star Wars geeks was...a hoot.

And, to get back on topic, I think Bill is spot on with the golf analogy. It's possible that the greatest Star Wars Minis player doesn't even have a DCI rating. While DCI ratings might be a general guideline as to ability, there are too many factors that can distort them. Up until yesterday, we didn't even have DCI opportunity in central Pa. I had to drive 1 to 2.5 hours just to play DCI. The venues I played in had varied play styles and competition levels. I mean this as no disrespect to the number one rated Pa player (as of this writing) but the last time I talked to him, he was convinced that Exar Kun was meta and GOWK (prebanning) wasn't. And you know what? At his venue, he was correct. That's the problem...guys that only play in one venue MAY actually be as good as their rating, but you'll really never know until you play the best. And the best is at GenCon.

I agree Jim, and that was the primary point I was trying to make. We can only use the tools that we have to analyze the player base. And DCI rating, or local skill, are only one piece of the data. But there are far too many examples that prove these two wrong to use them as anything more than a guide to perhaps start the conversation. I would even argue, that DCI rank doesn't just give you statistical outliers, but that perhaps as a many as 50% of the highly ranked DCI players aren't all that great at the game outside of their local venue. Although some of them, very well may be, we just can't say with any measure of accuracy.

I will add to what you said about Gencon, that I do believe there is at least one other place that gets close to it in terms of the total competition level, and that's when the Europeans get together either in France or Germany. Having played a couple of those guys on Vassal, watched others, and read their comments over the years, I can say with some degree of accuracy that they know what they are doing. The problem of course, to answer the OP's question, is that they are relatively unknown outside of Europe, and most aren't regular posters on any of the English forums. So to say they are the "business" would be an overstatement, even if they do contain what I consider a couple of the best of the best. I guess I can just argue for them, but I'm not sure that is really enough to make the case :)
