SO my wife wanted a 200pt squad that would perform well against my friends.....but with Ewoks, so I gave it a shot:
General Obi-Wan Kenobi Bith Black Sun Vigo Commander Gree Talz Chieftain Mas Amedda 11xEwok Scouts 5xEwoks
Basically the idea is using the 5 Ewoks as cover providers for the Scouts and using 4/5 unique characters as boosters for them. I originally wasnt going to put Kenobi in but I figure that way the Scouts always get a +4Atk from either him or Talz Chieftain.

eh I didnt really think 1 model with the Traps ability for 2 more points then a standard Ewok Scout was worth it.

That Traps essentially gives the Ewoks another +4 attack (while he's alive). You paid 20 points in the form of Commander Gree for that; so how can you say 2 points isn't worth it?

Because Wickets effect is only a range of 6 where Gree (thanks too Mas Amedda) doesnt have to be anywhere near the combat. Its fairly simple to watch Wicket get picked off first, plus I dont own Wicket so theres that too.

Wicket is also another ranged attack.
If you want Ewoks maybe it's better to go with Rebels and for your host the Ithorian Commander although its command effect will not stack with the Talz Chieftains. Speaking of stacking command effects I'm not sure you'd get the +4 attack from both Obi-wan and the Talz. On the topic of switching over to Rebels you'd use Kota in play of Obi. For whatever reason Ewoks and Republic just doesn't seem right to me.

The OP actually said that it would be 'either or' with regards to GOWK or the Talz Chieftain. However, I agree with Steve and others with regards to Wicket and also with Steve that Rebels is a better faction to go with. The Ithorian does what GOWK/Talz does for only 11pts; Riekken does what the BBSV does for 14. Both are board wide. Also, Stormie Han could allow them to move 12 and attack. (Again, boardwide) From there you could add more Ewoks and/or themed stuff like Commandos Luke and Leia and C3PO Ewok Diety, or more firepower if you wanted a little more punch and less theme.

So I did some checking and IF I did Rebels, Id use what Jim and Steve suggested plus toss in Lando Calrissian, Rebel Leader so that the Ewoks get Squad Assault, heres what it looks like:
Lando Calrissian, Rebel Leader Ithorian Commander General Rieeken Han Solo in Stormtrooper armor Wicket 15xEwok Scouts 6xEwoks
Unfortunately to build that squad in real life I am looking at spending $50 on ebay for all the Unique characters.

Building within a collection can definitely be hard for some of us so I get where you're coming from. I still design from a limitless collection perspective and then make changes as allowed although I still look for key pieces of squad building that also have some versatility behind them.

Nah, just use the squad builder and build from your collection, looking for CEs that boost speed, attack value, and damage. Also look for substitutes; Getting twin attack vs extra damage, movement breakers like swapping instead of speed boosts. One thing you may want to avoid is to pick 2 CEs that don't stack, like the Talz Chieftan and GOWK. Instead of using other characters as cover, use terrain. There are plenty of people who play even competitively with smaller collections, so don't sweat it if you don't have something...just change direction. (Of course, if every other squad you want to build is missing that same piece, it might be time to buy that one.)

yea I dont have any rebels so that why I figured using republic was a good idea. I know the +4atk from Talz and GOWK dont stack but the +10dmg from Talz and +4def from GOWK still works. I cant really think of anything else I have that can offer bonus's .
