A friend of mine came back from Gencon this year with a sweet Yoda custom. I've dabbled with making custom figs here and there, but I'm curious about what other methods besides my own that people use to make them. What kinds of glues? What kinds of paints? If you feel comfortable sharing, please do so.

Check the Customs forum, there is a thread about customizing techniques. Very helpful stuff for beginners and veterans alike.

Here is the link to the FAQ I started on customs. Please throw any further questions in there. The more the better so that it might be expanded for the best possible benefit to everyone.

I hope you find the advice you need in the thread, and I can't wait to see some customs!

Awesome!!! Thanks. Your article is very thorough. I especially like the part about the "green stuff". I'm going to have to give it a try. Thanks again!!!

What do you guys use for lightsaber blades? Do you just cut them off other minis? I've heard of colored acrylic rods, but I can never find them anywhere?

Pretty sure most of us get them from mutilated, but not entirely unwilling Mini donors. Or a Jedi Crusader cough cough cough

I was at a Michaels today, and I couldn't find anything directly suitable for a lightsaber blade. I walked around just about the entire store too. I have a few other ideas and will have to go hunting elsewhere.

but yeah just chop a saber off an extra mini, and save the parts, never know what you will need again.

Thats a great custom guide, thanks Dimetrodon! I think I had some links to plastic rods that make good lightsabers.

This was my earlier attempt at what Dimetrodon has already done extremely well, but it has some links to lightsaber-like material.

So Far I've got the following:

LightSabers:
- use a current mini to get the saber you need. Some of the (un)commons are rather cheap and you may already have too many lying around:

Ordering Lightsaber Material:
Hobbylinc

Plastruct Inc

Seems to be hard to connect to atm, so try Hobbylinc

Hobby's - as recommended by wannabe mexican for our friends in the UK

Paints:
Citadel Paints - recommended by CC-23478

Model Masters (acrylic) by Testors - recommended by Darth Sal. Typically available at most hobby stores.

Can't find those rods in an art store, or at least I couldn't.

I'll be checking out a Hobby shop near me tomorrow after work, Hopefully I can get singles and not have to buy a pack, because those rods look perfect.

Thanks a ton for the links Hydro!

@krazykay11
I use small plastic twist ties (the small wire with plastic coating) type typically found with Hasbro products/packaging in childrens toys, or at dime stores/hardware stores. I find that the wire is barely noticeable, once youve applied a translucent paint/ink wash to the potential blade. The advantage to using a twist tie blade is that you can make practically any shape or style youd like BigGrin

I used to use just a thumb tack to 'drill' the holes out for my cut & pinned customs: but I found a bunch of handy tools at my Local Dimestore...

Cant wait to see your customs,
and even if you mess up, you can salvage parts (such as the base/a gun or arm etc) from the botched mini...
best of luck,
Kobayashimaru
