Can a character with Melee reach be adjacent to one character but still attack another character that's within their melee reach range?

Subsequently, a character with a force power like riposte or any other such ability that allows a melee return attack, that character cannot use that ability if the attacking character isn't adjacent?

While attacking, Melee Reach makes it so all characters within X are adjacent. So all characters within X would be adjacent, and legal targets. You could make Melee Attacks with Djem So or Riposte, because they occur during the attack, and thus are still considered adjacent.

My question is, if I may slightly highjack this thread, why does the attacked character benefit from the attacking character's melee reach X special ability for Riposte/Djem So?

Djem so
Quote:
Glossary Text

Whenever a character with this special ability is hit by a melee attack, it makes a save of 11. On a success, this character can make an immediate attack against that attacker. If this character also has Lightsaber Riposte or another ability that lets the character make an immediate attack against the attacker, then the decision to use those abilities must be made prior to resolving the save for Djem So Style.

Lightsaber Riposte:
Quote:
Glossary Text

(Force; 1 Force point) When a character using this Force power is hit by a melee attack, it can make an immediate attack against that attacker. You must decide to use this power immediately after the attack hits.

The main reason they work the way they do is that the character with melee reach is still making a melee attack. Neither abillity requires them to be adjacent, Although for the purpose of the attack melee reach makes you adjacent and since all effects like riposte/Djem-so occur before the attack is fully re4solved than you are still considered adjacent.

does that help any?

I understand that it was ruled to work based on wording but conceptually it is absurd. Although, based on wording, you could state that they cannot attack back with DS or LR because attacking rules don't allow for a melee character to attack nonadjacent characters. I think it can be ruled that normal targeting/attacking rules are not superceded by the two abilities in question. Since the DS/LR character does not have Melee reach X, it cannot make the immediate attack. That's not how it is ruled so I'm not expecting things to change. I simply feel this is one of the idiosyncrasies within the game that forethought and word clarity could have alleviated.

It was. You are talking about the original wording. MR was useless back then.
The reason why it works this way is because of the timing of the attack, and how many steps there are.
Look over the resolving effects section of the FAQ. I can't exactly go into detail currently, but I will when I get home Mon.

In my opinion... melee reach should mean you can attack over that distance (for the purposes of the attack... from wording)

but other characters shouldnt benefit from it....

ie corran kills uggie from from 2 squares... uggie blows up... no damage to corran..

or .. djem so back is impossible as that charcter doesnt have reach.

This would make Melee reach worth it

What you are advocating is the return to the old wording. WHICH WORKED HORRIBLY. Savages literally could not use it ever, unless they could defeat the adjacent character, they could never use their MR. You could not use it with a whole wide variety of abilities like Cleave or Mighty Swing.

Either way there are weird "in universe" oddities. I know you don't like the oddities, but the current wording makes Melee Reach a good ability.

Seriously, non-adjacent Melee Attacks cause a LOT of headaches, there is a reason why you will likely never see them again.

And this is no longer a rules question. If you want to debate this, take it to general.
