Ok, my five year old niece had told me she liked playing with my minis (not the skirmish game, just the minis) and wanted some for Christmas. Now how do you say no to a request like that? Anyway, I figured that if I'm going to give her a minis I should make it a few but I should also make sure that what I gave her had some potential use as an educational tool if/when she ever gets into the skirmish game. Now I don't have dozen of everything sitting around but I figured I could spare the following squad:
--Em's squad-- 24 Jedi Watchman 23 Jedi Guardian 18 Old Republic Commander 16 Jedi Consular 13 Czerka Scientist 13 Human Engineer 10 Rodian Trader 10 Sullustan Scout 16 Old Republic Soldier x2 5 Old Republic Recruit (148pts. 11 activations)
So how bad do you think I did? All she really commented on was how many boys and girls there were but I was going for a little variety but also some similarities while keeping a touch of playability. I know the ORR sucks but it is simple. I also know that the Human Engineer doesn't have anything to repair but it is the cheapest door control I could spare and also fills the spot as a relatively non-threatening human female.

I think you've done well! You've got boys and girls, melee and non-melee, some cool Force Powers, a nice CE, some aliens and Satchel Charge. The Human Engineer is a nice starting piece. I picked some up for a couple of friends who I am trying to get into the game. There are a lot more spares of those floating around than there are Uggies. The only suggestion I would make is that the abilities of the Rodian Trader (and possibly the Czerka) are a bit too complex for such a young Padawan. There are more than enough things to consider without trying to remember who has Heal when it's not printed on their card, or who gets Twin vs who gets Jolt. Having said that, though, they are both fun pieces, so if you can teach her how to use them then go for it!

My only thought is that you could maybe put someone from the films in there. I doubt your niece will care about faction rules at that age. Just to make it more Star Warsy.

I maybe could have put film characters in there but there are two reasons I didn't: first, I don't know that she would even recognize them and secondly these came out of my collection I just don't have the extra rares (and that's what the movie characters are) if I want to keep my collection relatively intact. Most of the time I let her play with my clones (we know how useful they are in squad before the virtual sets) so I don't know that she really cares too much about what they look like. As I've said other places it is the lightsabers that point towards a StarWars game as much as anything else.
As for skirmishing with it I'm not making any bets but I wanted it to be possible. I know there are a few some what complicated pieces (Rodian Trader is actually an easy one to explain, he just gives out new abilities to people) but what fun is learning if there isn't a challenge involved.
