I was scanning through some posts on the customs thread... And came across an idea someone had where a guy wanted the community to create its own v-set for fun. Forget the guys name, but it is actually a really good idea.... I know we do this somewhat already with people saying what they would like to expect in the next v-set... but normally its just ideas of people, or abilities. So, to get the community more involved in the making of the v-sets, why not let us make a sub set?

Start a thread and let people submit full character ideas. Have a cut off date. Then let people vote on it. Majority would rule in the say of which 12 or whatever number were going to be made. And then the actual V-set designers could work out some kinks on pricing, wording, or overpowering of the pieces to make them playable? This way we get characters in the form that we as a community want.

I'm not saying I don't like the V-sets, I love them. But I have always wanted to be more a part of it then just, this is what I would like to see, or I playtested this stuff and this is how I would redo it. I don't feel as engaged and have never had a conversation with any V-Set designer on any piece. It just makes it feel like the work I did goes unnoticed in the playtesting or suggesting of abilities or character ideas.

So before this gets locked or anything, lets have a civil discussion on the possibility of this happening for us!

Thanks again for everything you guys do in the Designing of the v-sets, and I look forward to the rest of V-Set 4 to be realeased, especially the Jedi vs Sith Subfaction ( Hint Hint if any designer wants to spoil anything to me ;) )

If you want to design, then be part of play testing first.

I learned this last year, that I can not design a map. Show that you are willing to give time for play testing (and then actually play test and submit a write up). The V set 5 group is already working.

Can't you already do this in the Customs thread?

Bad idea. It would be tough enough on ONE piece, let alone twelve. And trust me, when design makes the necessary changes needed, the community will not be happy. Add in the time needed for the playtests, graphic design and proofing, it will take almost a year.

As for wanting to design, I understand that. It is the golden job everyone wants. But we don't need more designers, we need more playtesters. We do listen and read to playtests. It doesn't necessarily mean that a piece will be changed, or that recomendations will be used (playtesting isn't designing).

And I get a little peeved when you say that you want to do more, and yet I've got two very good threads for anybody to help out the game. Completing the FAQ is far, far more important than designing, and yet, I've only gotten one good suggestion. I'm not even looking for advice, merely tough questions. So don't give me the spiel about wanting to do more for the game, but dismiss playtesting and my FAQ project. There are ways to help out, design is merely a small, small one.

My group has playtested the last 2 V-sets now. And not once after I have sent in my reports has anyone sent anything back to me? Sometimes I even play test against people using the same thing as me and they say, hey those aren't the stats anymore, they changed them. How does that help me play test? That, to me, means that not enough people are working on it to get the word to everyonewhen things change. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the playtesting, but I enjoy more discussing with people about how I felt about it instead of putting it in a report. Now obviously you can't do that with everyone, because that would tie you guys up from the real world of non minis.... But, when the V-sets are the future of this game, I don't understand how you can have to many people on the design team? Thats like saying Jesus has to many followers trying to improve the world.

I'm not saying I don't appreciate being able to play test, because I do. And as far as the FAQ thing your working on Sithborg, I probably ask more questions about rules and scenarios because as much as I think I know, I always find things where I can see both sides and need clarification on it.

The V-sets are great and I'm not demanding to be more apart of helping them, I'm just asking what it takes and what the qualifications for it is? I mean, if you need more people on the FAQ.... Why not drop some of the V-set designers who would know more than me or some other people, and let them do that, and bring in new people for the design team? That would make more since to me than throwing someone like me in the mix of something I wouldn't feel comfortable with. ( Like the FAQ)

But what do I know? I'm just a loley Jamestown Minis player with no credentials on my resume other than a love for the game, and a competitive nature that wants to see this game continue to grow. That, and a continual drive to beat Weeks at the ATL regional Flapper LOL BigGrin

Well, I can assure you playtests are appreciated, even if you don't directly interact with the desigers. I will definately appreciate the feedback when V5 heads to playtesting.

As for my project, people who aren't the best at the rules are the best people to give me the direction I need. Yes, I will be doing some of the more complicated interactions that currently in the faq, but the FAQ isn't complete on basic questions of SAs. Questions that those have the rules down (not necessarily the V set designers, lol) would not think of.

Anyway, as to design by open voting of the community, it is just a cluster waiting to happen.

It's been tried in the past with the lost twenty. Results were mixed. The minis turned out decently, but the designing led to many headaches.

There were two big problems that occurred. The first was the near-continuous arguments between the casual and competitive crowds (Similar to the arguments we've seen in the past about Boba BH, GOWK, Bastila JM and Mace LotLS). Needless to say, nobody walked away from those arguments happy.

The other big problem was when the Wizards mods nearly killed the project because some people apparently were complaining about the amount of discussion going on about it. What they did was they took every single topic related to the lost 20 (General, mini customization, stat designs, etc.) and merged them all into one giant topic. It was a nightmare to say the least.
