I'm not sure how many people here have been keeping track of the production line for Fantasy Flight Games, but the full initial lineup for the miniatures game (which can be found here http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_minisite.asp?eidm=174&enmi=X-Wing) is scheduled for release on 8/29.... Sorry if its considered heresy to talk about the replacement for star wars minis on a site dedicated to star wars minis, but I for one am excited about the game....it sounds like it combines the "big picture strategy" of a card game with the constantly changing tactics of a minis game, I like the idea of customization and a focus on individual to small skirmish combat, its almost like a dueling game. At first the price of the game was a bit discouraging but the sculpts and paint details are amazing and - to me at least - seem worth the price when compared to the level of detail in wizos work...... I almost think it'd be a fun game to mesh into an RPG campaign, as the d20 system doesn't scale well to space combat buy if you could make custom cards for your characters you could take the combat elements of the x-wing game and put them into the campaign. I also like the way the company is handling the license when compared to wizos....their Living card game for star wars was scheduled to come out last month (coolstuffinc even had a preorder up for it) but the designers decided that the game could be better and scrapped the whole thing and started over, which shows a concern over quality that wizos lacked. What do all of you think? Are you planning on picking up at least a starter set?

Guessing at how quickly it went back to the drawing board, I'm guessing they realized they would be missing a big audience. I read the descriptions of the original design. It was going to lose the biggest potential market: the ex-SWCCG player. I fully expect the new game (I would bet for it to be unveiled at Gencon) to be more light vs dark. They are up for that design, as you can see in the new Netrunner game. Still, I am keeping a wait and see approach to this X-wing game. It all depends on the size of the models. It has to be close to the Titanium scale for me to even consider it.

The company did say that all the models are too scale with each other - and they do like as though that is true, based on the images I've seen so far - BUT they didn't say what that scale is.
I know the game itself is based heavily on their Wings of Glory game based around world war 2 dogfighting.....I'd put my money on them being the same size, or close to it, so that they can use the same basic components like the dial base and map sizing and such.....
Based on the amount of detail on the minis I'm guessing thay are close to titanium diecast sized, maybe a hair smaller, but they are a LOT bigger than the minis that wizos made for space combat......but again, without anything to compare them to in the photos the size is anyone's guess.
(if anyone does play the wings of glory game could you tell us what size those pieces are so we could have a general idea?)
When the game comes out I'm buying a full set of everything, so I can let you guys know what size they are then if we don't find out before release.

I agree and I think it was a wise move on FFG's part to not try to replace the star wars miniatures game as that'd create a fractured fan base kinda like the whole DnD versus Pathfinder thing that's going on now.....
I'm also glad its not a "collectible" game as I've (unfortunately) gotten into the money sink that is magic the gathering and I can't afford a second major gaming habit.....this will be relatively cheaper.

Completely agreed Guess the question is what's next? I think they will play it safe and go with: TIE Bomber TIE Interceptor A Wing B Wing If their feeling a bit adventurous, and want to make ALOT of collector money TIE Defender Rouge Shadow Stealth X Millennium Falcon and/or Outrider If they want to secretly fufill my ultimate request and get crazy EU on us, which by the way will never happen :( : Coralskipper!!! (this would be a first and really popular!) Havok (Nym's epic bomber, or anything from the starfighter series) Ship (From Fate of the Jedi) Chiss clawcraft (pure badass) I guess that last list is the ones we'll never see eh?

You forgot the Z-95 headhunter on that list, it'd be cool to get a mara jade pilot card; since they're intending to keep everything to scale I doubt we'll see anything larger than a starfighter.....a b-wing may even be pushing it, but if the game sells I can easily see them doing a TIE Defender or even a Z-95....based on what I've seen it would seem that FFG is focusing heavily on the original trilogy, which means they're aiming towards the older audience....so I can see them doing a lot of Expanded universe stuff....if the game sells

The more I think about it I'd be curious to see how they'd pull off a TIE bomber to both accurately represent it and still make it worth playing as the game is focused on dogfighting.....and an At-st is probably better in a dogfight than a tie bomber >.< I'm sure they'd do it just so they'd have the model but it'll be interesting to see what direction they take it...
Maybe they'll do a Tie bomber and b-wing at the same time and introduce an optional objective system.... Something to bomb.....because I think an ewok is better in a dogfight than a b-wing..... :3

Where did you get the 8/29 release date? Seems odd/too bad that it after GenCon (though I'd be surprised if they were not also selling it at GenCon... probably at the full $40 price rather than $26 at miniature market). Here is a good article that someone recently posted on those forums. Contains some stock info, but also some new info/detail that is worth reading. http://www.gametrademagazine.com/Home/1/1/58/591?articleID=122213

It handles like a more fragile Y-Wing, so it can fight well, but is at a large disadvantage against the interceptor types.

I sadly never have played those games as they're almost as old as I am (I wish I could have) but I do read a lot of the essential guide books, and while a TIE Bomber was better at dogfighting than a b-wing it was still a death wish to take one against an x-wing or y-wing

No problem Squelch....I am exceptionally surprised at the lack of coverage the game is getting on other sites - I haven't even seen anything on rebelscum.com - and in all honesty if I didn't "have my dealer on speed dial" I wouldn't have known the release date either...... (continuing on that thread, if you get the chance its always good to be friendly with your LGS and comic dealers, as he usually if you help them out they'll help you out.....I price figures and minis - and occasionally go on scalping raids for him - and I get a decent discount, priority on stock and he'll keep me in the loop on release dates)
