I didn't want to hyjack the ABM thread, so i'll start a new topic here. On the subject of why rebels are one of the bottom factions right now: Echo24 wrote:
The game has accelerated in a few ways lately, the main 2 ways being denial and power. Denial has increased with more abilities like Ysalimiri, Force Absorb, Absorb Energy, ABM, Black Ops, etc. Power has increased with pieces like the new Darth Maul and Mace Windu (among others). Rebels haven't kept up with either of these things, though. They've gotten relatively little competitive stuff in the V-sets, and the stuff they have gotten has been still unable to keep up with the increased denial and power. Rebel Pilot squads are cool, but they get hurt by ABM pretty bad and also are weak defensively all-around (as Rebels are in general), so the further increased power in the game makes it even tougher to do well with them.
The main thing is that every other faction has gotten more competitive attention than Rebels, and the attention that the Rebels have gotten hasn't really answered their weaknesses. The few things that they have gotten that have been intended to be competitive have had the same weaknesses as the rest of the faction as opposed to answering them, which is what they need.
Is the V-Set team addressing this issue? I know things take time. Its hard to fix a faction in 1 set (and when you do, you end up with threads like the ABM one). However, there was a lot of build up for scum and villainy about pushing the main characters from the OT to a level that made them worth playing, and to make them be the focus of competitive rebels. The new han and leia are great pieces, but they aren't really enough at this time to do much for the faction (It would seem. Only future competitions can vouch for this). Can we expect more in this next release? It would be disappointing to have the 5 pieces that are coming out (has this number been confirmed) act as fluff for a faction that could use a solid boost (pieces like Porkins are cool... but). Will Lando save the day? I know that only so much can be said as these pieces haven't been spoiled. Im just looking for theories on what the rebel needs to really cement their faction.

The new Han and Leia were solid steps in the right direction I think; I actually have a squad with them that I really need to test and refine and I might take to to a Regional next year. It looks solid on paper at least.
I wasn't a designer on set 5, but it has some strong stuff for 2 of the Rebel subfactions. Lando is a really solid piece. He doesn't really address their weakness to ABM, but is a strong all-around piece who will be key to some Rebel squads. Jan Ors will obviously be a Kyle-booster, and the Rebel Kyle is actually good because he is a strong stand alone piece so ABM doesn't hurt him too much.
They're getting another piece which helps them with a few weaknesses: It's strong against OR (ABM doesn't hurt it) and it gives them a solid way to get an attack bonus (something they are desperately in need of).
The main thing that Set 5 doesn't address is their survivability issues, but the new Han actually hit that pretty well by giving out Evade via a SA and making Chewbacca a bodyguard (Chewbacca Fearless Scout is now the most cost effective Bodyguard in the game!).
I am a designer on Set 6, though, and this is definitely something we want to continue addressing. It's way too early to give much away, but there is one piece that should give them lots of new options and address a big gap in the faction.

I was personally shocked that they didn't chose to boost HS, Scoundrel. I know he's pricy, but he seemed like he would be the staple in a non-ce heavy rebel future. I was hoping the new pieces would bring him back, but i guess at this point he is a bit dated for what he does.

Camaraderie and Versatility were definitely an awesome direction to go. They really capture the feel of the rebel faction. While the figures themselves aren't overly powerful, the ability to swap out the core of your squad to suit your needs really makes an impact. It'll really show when/if versatile versions of Luke and Chewie come out. Having a counter to ABM will also help, but they don't need a full counter as that just means a resurgence of Dodonna and Riekann.
I'm envisioning something like:
C-3PO, Rebel Liaison
Rebel Cost: 8 HP: 30 Def: 16 Atk: 0 Dam: 0
Unique Droid Draw Fire Relay Orders Camaraderie (Allied Han and Leia gain Disciplined Leader)
