WotC did a great job at first of a Star Wars minis game, but it became incredibly open to power-gaming and lost the fun with impossibly over-powered pieces. For example, Yoda on Kybuck running down entire trooper armies on turn 1. Game over turn one - hope you had fun. I've seen Furious Assault with Accurate shot mow down entire squads as well.

It was hard to get new players into a game in which if they weren't fielding a half dozen $30 pieces they were dead on turn one!

FFG is currently now producing the X-Wing miniatures game, the Star Wars Card Game, and the Star Wars RPG game as well and doing a pretty good job. I'm hoping that it's only a matter of time before they start producing a minis skirmish game as well. The FFG card game will never beat the classic and epic Decipher Star Wars game but it's okay. Their RPG isn't at the level of West End Games D6 RPG, but it does look promising. Their X-Wing minis though completely blows away anything that came before it!

So, here's to hoping for FFG to produce the next Star Wars minis skirmish game.

I would not be surprised in the least if they are not working on a system for Star Wars based on their Dust Tactics game. A bit more focus on actual armies. Let's be honest, Stormtrooper hordes will sell.

And the LCG does give the Decipher game a run for it's money. It's very different, and the strategic decisions are night and day. But it is very fun, and much less complicated.

I am a new player to SWM. Ive been playing for less than a year. I have to disagree with this for a couple reasons. The first is that this is a collectable game not unlike a pletheora of other collectable games. yes it is difficult to get into but no more so than any others. there are always going to be people who drop hundreds of dollars on squads or decks or whathaveyou so that they can play competitively, but who starts out playing a game competitively? Secondly, since the invention of the vsets, cheap common pieces have been amped up in power. so for cheap, someone can still field a good squad

I agree with theycallmejosh.

In SWM the swarm squad-type has always been difficult. Trooper swarms have always needed something "extra" like death-shots, super-stealth, self-destruct, rebirth (ie, Leia of Hoth) or something of the sort in order to be played competitively. So, OP, in your initial example of Yobuck (a top-tier competitive piece) mowing down a pile of troopers (definitely not top-tier), I'd say that isn't surprising. Comparing Yobuck to Stormies (or whatever) is like comparing apples to raisins. Change those troopers to Naboo Troopers with opportunist twin deathshots and you've got a whole different story. But--at least on a competitive level--SWM has never been about the trooper swarms.

Personally, I'd go crazy for this! That would be SO much fun! I haven't played Dust Tactics or anything like it, but I like the sound of a game that IS (unlike SWM) focused on trooper swarms.

I'm already playing the X-Wing game with my kids, and they enjoy it immensely, so I'm pretty sure they'll be up for a trooper-style game too.

A new skirmish game based on SW is only a matter of time methinks. Given the initial surge from X-wing's success should only add fuel to a new product line from FFG; as there at plenty of rubes (like me) out there ready to drop cash on it, provided its halfway decent.

The main problem I have is too many games and too little disposable time to play them...

This. WotC's Star Wars Miniatures are not really about giant armies, although they do it easily. They focus more on the characters and midrange pieces.

I totally agree. Also on that last past BigGrin

I've been wanting to play SW on a large scale (armies of troopers) for years, but haven't been able to come up with any good rulesets for it, so i'd be all over this. Especially if the scale was about the same as SWM, so that they could be used as proxies.

+2 or 3.. HArd for me now with limited time and even desire, let alone money to get totally immersed in any new game. I guess I'm still tied into the original game and am not willing to start all over in a new game. I will admit though that age is a factor for me. I got into the WOTC game when I was in my early 30s. Now that Im almost thirty nine, I am lacking the desire and the motivation to start over. Have fun though with the next incarnation of SW Gaming. I totally understand if a new game comes out and is succesful. I felt that way when this game came out!BlooMilk
