I don't know where to point you for rules help, but my suggestion for squads is to do something he has seen in a movie. Vader with Stormtroopers vs notable Rebels, or Republic Jedi with their clone army vs Grievous(only use droid army commander if he's droids) with battle droids. I have noticed anytime I try to get a new player into a game, go with something they know as it will draw their attention and enjoyment in.

I agree with DLV, but I would use pretty basic versions of the characters. Ex- use Grevious, Supreme Commander instead of Droid Army commander.

If you bought a starter set you might have a rule book lying around that could be helpful. The Clone Wars one is good I think. I'm not sure how much they cost but you could get a rule book for him.

You can always take a look at the Rules Resources over at SWMResources (http://www.swmresources.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&id=9&Itemid=104) that includes a PDF version of the Clone Wars Rulebook

The CW rule book has a lot of really good basic guidance.

* Nickname's guides add some finer points. I don't see them up, but I'll dig them out and upload here in a bit.

The biggest thing would be to have two simple starter squads that cover a bit of everything (ranged, melee, combining fire, force points and powers, and CEs).

You'll want to draw primarily from the earlier sets, back when everything was simpler.

Something like

Kit Fisto
Wookiee Berserker x2
Clone Trooper x3
Clone Trooper Grenadier
Twi'lek Scoundrel (Or Ithorian Scout if you want to cover Stealth)

vs.

General Grievous, SC
Bodyguard Droid
Super Battle Droid x2
Battle Droid x4

I always found the 3 JWMs, Rep Commandos (Boss, Sev, Fixer, Scorch) and a Naboo Trooper at 150 was a pretty simple teaching squad. You have everything more or less there to use in the game.

Read the rules mentioned above. I like to use a Vader, stormtrooper commander and fill out the rest of 125 to 150 points with storm troopers. Then the rebels get old ben from rebel storm and one of the cheaper lukes then fill the rest of the 125 to 150 with rebel troopers.

This does a couple of things. First it keeps the game rules fairly simple. Second it gives you a taste of several aspects of the game. Force users, Melee pieces, Commander Effects and shooters.

When playing and you don't understand something just get to a point where both people think it is fair and play that way the rest of the day. Take notes careful notes of the rules or situation in question. Then come back and simply ask and you will get your questioned answered.

The main point from where you are at is to have fun. once you get a good grasp on the rules you can start changing your squads and learning about new rule interactions.

If it was me trying to teach a friend and get them into the game I would find out who some of their favorite characters are and start a build from that point. Having some sort of hook for them will be important.

From there I think many people covered it. Focusing on a variety of simpler rules/concepts is good. Have a squad ready to face it that is similarly balanced or even stack the deck in their favor a bit so you have to work for it.

Combining fire seems to be something that gets forgotten about even by experienced players. That's a good thing to teach early as part of their foundation.

When I am teaching someone for the first time I generally use Dynamic DUO and ask them who their fav character is and build from there. Then I use a less optimal squad for myself. Then the game goes faster and less for them to worry about.

I still teach new people with 10 storm troopers vs. 10 rebel troopers. It's easy to start with, no wild abilities no force powers, and no commander effects. This makes the basics of the game easy such as initiative, 2 per phase activation, turn options (move attack, attack move, or no attack double move) and combind fire. the game pace is fast and repeats with consistancy so that the new player has a good base to start with. Then you can add in more complicated figures from there if you wish.

The best way is to start how most of us started. Just use rebel storm characters and add sets from there from time to time.
