How Do You Decide What Character to Create?
I was looking over my new batch of cards, and thinking about my next “set” and while I was looking at pictures I started thinking about the process of creating a character.
Now if you’re creating a V-Set character you job is simple; “Is there a character I can repaint, a mini that’s close and with a little repositioning of limbs and paint” or the extreme “I may have to Green Stuff the whole thing.” V-Set pieces are easy in that you’ve already got a character and you just need to create a mini for it. I was thinking along the lines of creating your own character.
Do you look at a mini and see its possibilities? Come at it from a Faction standpoint? “I want to create a Mando that does …” Have a set of abilities or a species you want and try to match the species to its characteristics? Read or see something that clicks in your head and makes you say “Yeah, I want that.”
When I made mini’s, I tried to find a mini of the right species (If necessary, a species head to match the right action position) and then I’d go from there; In the old days I’d only make a card if I could make a mini of it (Very Limiting!) Sometimes, I’d find an interesting mini and create a character to match it (Fun to do with D&D, Heroclix and Mage Knight mini’s.)
After the hands/eyesight weren’t steady enough (the E-Xacto gods are cruel) I switched to cards. With cards, it’s a different process. I look for pics and see if they give me an idea; sometimes I’ll read a SW’s book and spot an idea for a character there (ex. I got a Falleen Combat Instructor idea from the Plagius book.)
So, how do the rest of you come up with your Ideas?

(Just as a heads up, I only really do stats. I've tried a few simple chop n' swaps, though, for RPG characters, but they don't look very good. That's why I switched to DB53 ) It depends. There are 4 main reasons that might drive me to make a mini (usually just one reason but sometimes more than one for a single mini). 1) A character that hasen't been done yet that I like (like Vrook), or has been made but lacks a completely different version that represents an entirely different part of the character (like Jaina Solo before the Vsets). 2) Smilar to the second part of 1; a character that has been done but that I don't feel has ever really been done justice in a way that represents the character. (Example would be Darth Revan). Especially if there's a great sculpt for them sitting on awful stats, and/or I like the character. 3) I get an idea for a new SA (or combination of SAs/other parts of the character) that would be interesting enough to warrant creating a character just to fit it on. (Example would be the Rebel Martyr. I thought "What about cheap Noble Sacrifice fodder?" It'll take some playtesting in that case). 4) I want to help out a faction or subfaction that neeeds it badly. (Examples include Rune Haako, Nemoidian Commander and Elite Nemoidian Commando). Besides those, sometimes I just get an inexplicable urge to make a charactter, or I sit down with no plans and just sort of fish around in the ol' idea pool while looking through factions, SAs, etc.

That sort of sums up why I look for new pics/check out older, unused pics and of course, while reading, what pops up and bites me while I'm reading a new book. New books are usually a gold mine of new ideas

I tend to just make them on characters I really like, and sometimes I do versions of characters to death. And by characters I mean Luke Skywalker. I currently have 16 different versions of Luke Skywalker + 2 Clones of his.
But usually I will see or read something and that will spark my interest. Like watching Clone Wars I like making Unique Clones, reading about the NJO I like making them etc. I guess it just takes something to pique my interest. Now after I make them they don't always turn out great but there is just a spark I usually feel that makes me what to make someone.
I will say that my ability to make non-uniques isn't so great. I just don't always know where to go...I've made a Few ARCs I'm happy with and 1 GAG Commander but that is about it.

True, but they are all fresh-feeling and varied.

I never knew who Col Sera or Kyrissa were until I saw the picture. Try nailing down literature-only characters with just arty photos on the cover of a book.

Indeed; I did a Kyrissa card a few weeks ago. Never played the card game and Wook doesn't have much. I sometimes rely on other people to tell me how close/far off the mark I am
