Hi all,

What is the commonly embraced method for determining these?

1) The map to play

2) The starting areas

3) Which starting area each player starts in

4) Who places their characters in a starting area first?

Do you mean in a standard two-player game?

If so, then, generally, both players roll, and the higher roll chooses the map. The other player then has the choice of who sets up first. The person who sets up first chooses the side they set up on.

If you're asking about more casual or mass battle formats, in our group, the map is usually pre-selected. Starting areas are usually still determined by dice roll (either choosing in order, or the first person chooses and the rest go clockwise, or something similar).

Thanks for the answers. One question left.
How do u determine the starting areas for each squad?

I usually go with the blast door vs the airlock or else any three rows from the back.

Standard 2 player game:

Any legal squares within the first 4 rows of the short edges of the map. Large and Huge characters must have part of their base within that area, but part of their base can cover squares farther out.
