Just curious... why are the dathomir witches a NR subfaction? Wouldn't it have made more sense to make them fringe? Were you just trying to keep in theme with WOTC's design of making the sithwitches imperial rather than fringe?

It just seems strange to me, but my only experience with Dathomir witches is Charal, who clearly isn't NR.

I'm no expert, and it has been a while since I remember reading too much about them, but I think the Dathomiri became members of the New Republic at some point, and there are a few clans that had interactions with Luke's NJO over the years (I'm thinking of Hapes specifically.) I do know they had one rule that "Never concede to evil" so making them Fringe would make that part tricky with Dark Side Factions. And I don't think they had much interaction with Rebels or with the Core during the OR or Republic Era...with all that in mind I think NR makes the most sense.

The Dathomiri being part of the New Republic is a result of The Courtship of Princess Leia, set 8 years after the Battle of Yavin.

Warlord Zsinj had set up his base of operations there, but when the Hapans (who were a different group) tried to marry Leia and Prince Isolder, Han won the deed to Dathomir in a game. He then kidnapped Leia and took her to Dathomir - discovering Zsinj's presence there. Luke went to Dathomir independently to hunt down the lost Chu'unthor for the Jedi training artifacts within, and Isolder accompanied him to find Leia. Long story short, Isolder ends up falling in love with Teneniel Djo of the Singing Mountains Clan and marries her - Teneniel becomes Queen Mother of the Hapan Consortium (and later mother of Tenel Ka). Han and Leia fight Zsinj, killing him when Han fires some concussion missiles at the bridge of the Iron Fist, allowing the Hapan Fleet to defeat his forces. They then return to Coruscant and get married, while the Hapans agree to open diplomatic relations with the New Republic. While the Hapans remain independent of the Republic (and would for quite a while), the Dathomiri ally with the New Republic, thankful for the defeat of the Nightsisters (which was also a result of the novel) and Zsinj.

Interesting. I'd read a few young jedi knight books as a kid, and remember tenel ka being of some exotic origin, but didn't realize she came from the witches. That would explain the rancor tooth saber...
