Hello all,

I am new to this game and was wondering if it's a game breaking house rule to allow New Republic and Rebel pieces be considered one faction when facing off Imperial or Fringe pieces. More specifically, Kyle Katarn who did fight during the Galactic Civil War.

If the consensus is that this is a game breaking rule, could anyone let me know if there is a Rebel faction Kyle Katarn out there I could pick up? Or perhaps a Rebel/Fringe character that has an Affinity Special Ability that lets him be in a Rebel squad?

Thanks guys!

For a collection of 200 pieces or fewer, 'light side' versus 'dark side' is probably the best way to play. Allow one side to use all of the light side pieces and the other side to use all the dark side pieces. Treat Yuuzhan Vong, Mandalorians, and Fringe as neutral, which could be used by either side.

For larger collections and in a competitive environment, following the faction rules becomes more important. Certain combinations could be strong enough to nearly break the game.

Wizards of the Coast stopped producing new pieces in 2010. Since 2011, there have been professionally printed Vset cards available, which are new stat cards (legal in tournaments) that use existing miniatures. One of those cards is a Rebel Kyle Katarn. The stats for all of the Vset cards and all of the Wizards of the Coast cards are available here on Bloomilk. If you choose 'Characters-Browse', you can see all of them. Sets are listed in reverse chronological order. Masters of the Force was the last set produced by WotC. The rest are Vsets. There have been 5 Vset releases, and each also came with an accompanying smaller set at the same time.

I find that "Light Side v. Dark Side" is a little game breaking and far less fun than it sounds on paper.
From your post, it does seem like you are either trying to keep the game themed, or at least keep it a little balanced than what Good v. Bad would have to offer.

From my knowledge, there would be a few game-breaking combinations, but nothing outwardly horrific. My advice would be to just try it, and if you have any particularly nasty group members that device broken teams, then just ban certain combinations from being played.

Cheers!

Thanks for the info fellas! Very helpful stuff. Nice, friendly community you have here. I usually see communities rip apart new members with silly questions so thanks again!

That Kyle is pretty awesome. I am definitely going to have to break out the green stuff and paints and make a mini to go along with those stats.

Ah, Green Stuff. Interesting idea you have there. I usually use Green Stuff for my Warhammer pieces; never thought to use them for SWM.

There are also lots of guys on bloomilk (see 'Customs' section of the forums) who are specialists with making custom pieces. I'm sure some would be glad to make you a custom Kyle to go with the stats, if you commissioned them to do so. This is, of course, if you want it bad enough, as their time will cost something of course.

Anyway, welcome to Bloomilk Katarn07 ThumbsUp BlooMilk

A nice easy custom for Rebel Operative is to take Combat Instructor, cut off his Lightsaber and glue a blaster into his hand, it looks like he is charging with the blaster. This is what I did and I think it turned out pretty nicely. (I believe I used a Death Watch Raider for the gun as I have a bunch and their blaster looks nice and is easy to get at.)

Thanks. I do apologize. I quickly wrote this on my lunch break expecting it to take longer for replies. I'll read over the rules in more detail before I post next. Every other SWM site I've found is dead. I used to be an active member/trader over at WotC under this same name. I don't plan on getting too involved here but will definitely use it as my #1 resource on the game.

From what I understand, this poster stopped collecting during A&E. If that is true, I'd recommend a head swap for Rodian Scoundrel and either the original Kyle, Original RS Obi (hair and beard dyed) provided you have them to spare. If not use a pilot and paint a beard on one. :)

There's a Jan Ors and Jerec too?! I'd love to make all three of these. Not sure what legs I'll use for Kyle yet. that Rodian Scoundrel's look nice but i dont own him. perhaps ill get him and invest in a Galactic Alliance Trooper for the torso (with a jacket sculpted over the chest armor) and the CorSec Officers for the head and arms. Id like a thermal detonator belt and a plasma cannon from the Dark Trooper strapped onto him to reflect his arsenal. Also, Kyle Katarn didn't have a beard in the original Dark Forces.

I'll post pics if and when he's finished. I've got other action figure projects to work on before I get back into chopping and painting miniatures. In the meantime, my Universe Kyle will stand in his place.

Out of interest, what uber combos would you get from hypothetically combining the New Republic/Rebel factions. I'm sure there are some strong combinations, but they do share a lot of the same tech options - eg Dodonna, Levitation, Disruptive - so I don't think it's as extreme as combining some other factions (like bringing Whorm into the Republic).

Some ideas:
- get Rieekan into New Republic.
- get Ferus Olin into a New Republic squad - he could be pretty handy in a Luke GH squad.
- get Anakin Solo into a Rebel squad.

These all seem handy, but nothing spectacularly amazing. What uber squad can you make with combining Rebels and New Republic?

I would have to say that double Levitation would be a pain. also i could see an interesting squad with Luke gh, Kota, and a bunch of felucians.

Either of the new Lukes with Evade might be a problem.

Not sure. It's really not my intention of getting uber combos. I want to avoid them if possible to keep the game balanced between factions. My interest is for thematic reasons.

Sorta goes along with what others have mentioned, although there are some examples recently popping up that are supposedly a bit overpowered with Luke. I'm not familiar with all of those pieces. I only have the RS-BH characters currently and the ones I have I'm not overly familiar with like you veterans are.

This is a piece I really would love to combine with Kyle Katarn. Check out my first draft of a Reb/NR squad here. If I'm correct in Rieekan's abilities, it's definitely a miniature I have to pick up.

Rieeken's definitely great. General Wedge Antilles does almost the same thing for the NR (followers only though, not all allies), and is much easier to get.

Could you please clarify the difference between a "follower" and an "ally?"

Is a follower any ally without commander effects? Or is specifically a non-unique character without commander effects? Allies entail the whole squad, correct?

Friendly games me and my brother do this kind of stuff all the time mixing factions, at an actual competion though you won't get away with it. Your first squad is pretty decent for 100 points :) I approve.

Correct an ally is anyone in the squad, a follower is an ally without a commander effect.
