I remember seeing a post from Echo a while back that a lot of Vset pieces are based on or inspired by customs that the designers see. I think it would be a good idea if the designers left a comment on either the Vset piece or the custom piece when this happens, saying that it did and what piece it was based on / what Vset piece was based on it (depending where the comment is posted). I suggested this a while ago but no on ever responded. Not only would this be a nice thing to do, it feels wrong not to credit the piece's base.

I don't think it's quite as simple as Echo stated or you took it. If we look through the customs for a piece, it's several customs that show up in our search and we tend to look for unifying themes amongst them.

Then he must have been outright lying because that's not at all what he said. (And Echo dosen't lie).

Haha, thanks for the vote of confidence.

It's true that some things are specifically taken from customs, while some things are generally inspired by themes we see. I think every designer looks at customs differently, though, so I really only speak for myself and the couple of other designers that I know look at things the same way.

The real problem with giving credit to customs like that is thy we generally start first drafts 6-9 months in advance of release, which is when we would be looking through the customs. We have also been making 72 pieces each set, and honestly sometimes only a handful are directly inspired by customs. All that together means that by the time sets are released, I've forgotten what came from where! Scared

You're right, though, it's a good idea; it's just something that designs in the future are going to have to keep better track of, so it can be done after the set is released.

I agree, corranhorn. I know theres a few v-set minis that instantly remind me of one of mine or another custom I've seen here on bloomilk. I think it flattering when I see one that resembles a custom I made. It could be random chance that the designers were thinking alike, (we see this all the time amongst us custom makers) sometimes too I think the v-set designer was 'inspired.' It would be nice to get a little recognition if one of our customs is used at the base for a v-set mini.

Do also keep in mind that it's actually surprisingly often that a custom maker does just coincidentally make something thy is very similar to a V-set design. One custom maker mentioned it with the new Darth Sion; he came up with the same idea of lots of starting FP but not letting him gain more. His custom was actually posted 3 days after the final QC of the V-set Sion. So even though it's the same idea, neither were inspired by the other, nor could they even possibly have been.

Of course; I didn't mean to suggest that all Vset piece with a similarity to any custom piece was based on it, just that when they are it would be a nice gesture to know.

That all makes sense, thanks for responding!

I know Deri (fingersandteeth) did a really thorough vset 5 reflections on design report. He credited many outside sources and inspiration.

I only posted one custom set - back when the customs on Bloomilk first went live. I've seen a BUNCH of my ideas come up in the Vsets, but I wouldn't be surprised if most (even all) of them were independent ideas from the designers.

One-time use accurate shot (my Luke Skywalker, Farmboy and Focused Attack in the Vsets)
Amidala switching places with a decoy (though that one was pretty obvious, I think)
Combine fire damage cannot be avoided (my Coordinated Attack and VSet Concentrate All Firepower)
Swap yourself (my Stormtrooper TK-421 and Vset Darth Revan, SL)
Malakili with both Empathy and a CE for Savage (hold them back and then let them go)

Others probably came up with similar ideas independently, too, besides me and the Vset designers.

I agree, since all great V-set pieces were inspired by my ideas, I deserve more credit for my genius ;)

I will say I will occasionally browse the customs for characters, only to see what people what people are expecting from a character who I may not necessarily know that well. Not necessarily for ideas for abilities. Because lord knows, the last thing custom people want is me to start commenting on their new abilities/CEs. The designers get enough of that already.

And I will say, even if a designer takes the base idea off a custom, there are so many hands in the pie before release, it is tough to say what part was borrowed or was original. A lot of my original ideas got near complete rewrites, but some core ideas remained.

Not that I care since I throw so much out there (good and bad) but it would be amusing to know if I'd created something that had been partly to blame. so to speak, for something the V-Setters did. I even noticed about 20+ pieces that came out last set alone that I'd done cards for previously in the last year or two.

I'd wager the opposite is true.

I think it would be quite encouraging to have a designer make a comment about a well done character or ability
