Why would anyone ever use a non-adjacent attack, sa, or force power attack against the x-1 viper droid? If I am reading it correctly, it takes no damage ever, and it could only hurt the attacker with a save of 11?

Hey there! The actual effect it has is this: When it is hit by an ATTACK from a non-adjacent enemy, the attacker must make a save of 11. If that save fails, the attacker takes the damage instead of the defender (x1). Otherwise, the x1 just takes the damage as normal. Hope this helps :)

You are reading it incorrectly.

If the attacker makes the save, the Viper Droid takes damage as normal. If the attacker fails the save, the Viper Droid takes no damage and the attacker instead takes the damage that the Viper would have taken. It's the same with Energy shield.

Thanks for the explanation. So, for the attacker, at best, it's a 50/50 chance of hitting yourself? Still not great odds. And I now see that force powers and SA do not apply unless they lead to a rolling of the die.

Yes, many of them require a save.
