This is the Revised Core Edition of Star Wars d20, made by wizards of the coast. It was a cool system, and I loved lots of aspects about it, but ultimately Saga Edition, which was released a few years later by Wizards, was a better system for replicating the feel of Star Wars.
Edge of the Empire is the most current star wars RPG, and uses a completely different system. Its produced by Fantasy Flight games, and is supposed to be much more cinematic that even saga edition.
As for the classes, I'm not sure. Those are mostly custom classes that don't actually exist in the Revised Rules or Saga Edition. He'll have to explain the rules and classes since he using custom rules. Normally, our of that list, Tech Specialist was the only class that actually exists in the Revised rules. Some of the other classes may have been Prestige classes (classes that you take at a higher level, after specializing in your base class), but I don't remember Mercenary or Berserker being available prestige classes in that system.

The EotE system is fun. Teamwork is the focus. You can fail and succeed at the same time. Drawback is the custom dice. Unlike other systems, you roll the trademark dice or use the trademark app (knock-off free aps available). I would also suggest 3 sets of the dice as you won't get enough Red d12s you need for piloting.
The fun aspect is even if you fail (get no successes), you can cause your enemy to have issues (and vice versa). Thematically, you miss the shot on a Gamorean guard (roll no successes) but you can add problems like that missed shot scared a lady and she screamed loud enough to distract the guard (add a difficulty d6) to the mix. Fate intercedes by allowing you to boost a die (turn a d6 to a d12 for advantage) or fate can screw you (upgrade a difficulty to a D12). As long as your successes out number your failures, you hit.
No doing math for DC's and adjustments.
I haven't played a full game, just the intro but you can start off as a Droid. They are more or less a race.

I won't say it's the greatest but the onus is on the GM to keep it cinematic in regards to consequences and opportunities. Basically, the GM interprets the tea leaves on the dice to ensure things go ok. I ran both the heal bot (stock character in the intro game) and GM'd so it was a learning experience. I have no idea how the force powers work. I assume they work the same way but with the force dice (light side and dark side).

My understanding is there are no Force Powers yet, that will be in a future expansion which is one of the reasons I haven't looked into yet, if I'm gonna play I want Jedi.

You can play a force sensitive character in this system, but with very limited powers and access to the force. The point of Edge of the empire is not to play a jedi, its to play a fringe/smuggler/scum&villainy style of character. The jedi doesn't mesh. The next game* FFG is releasing focuses on nobles and soldiers in the rebellion. The final game focuses on jedi.
*I say next game and not next book because these are stand alone products. You do not need to own edge of the empire to play the next book that is released, nor do you need those 2 books to play the Jedi game. This is good for gamers who don't want to buy all the books and might want to run a game that focuses on Luke Skywalker styles of characters, but not the Han solo Type. It does mean that if you want to incorporate all of the different kinds of characters available to the system, you have to own all 3 books, and are paying 3x over for the basic rules that will be printed in each book.

Especially at $60 a book.

I have not gotten to play Edge of the Empire yet. I have heard mixed reviews, but most of the complaints I hear don't sound like they would bother me (the biggest being that people need new dice or a converter to play, cry me a river). However, I am very attached to Saga Edition. Its hard to imagine a system that does star wars better. Saga got me into this game, as I bought a booster of A&E to use in my campaign and have been hooked on SWM since. However, if Saga has a fault, its terrible ship combat and a lopsided system that makes designing high level challenges nearly impossible.

For anyone who has played the FF RPG, is it map-based combat? Can our SWM figures and maps be used?
