It looks like about 12 of us will be competing in NZ's Annual 150 point tournament, HaweraCon, tomorrow. There are four of us travelling up from Lower Hutt, Darth Rattlehead is coming down from Hamilton, Darth O is coming over from Napier, as well as a bunch of local Hawera players.

Here's a map of New Zealand for reference - it's from some blog, so the black line is irrelevant, but you might want to see if you can find Hawera, Hamilton, Napier, and Lower Hutt:

Each year, our season culminates in July's National Tournament, so this is the first big tournament this year - we had the more casual Hutt100 in September, but this is the first big hit-out for the year.

It's interesting choosing squads for 150 points - there aren't many tournaments at 150 anymore, so it's harder to know what the top squads are. In 2010, HaweraCon #1 was won by Yobuck, Rex, and Dash, in 2011 it was won by Mace LotLS, Rex, and Ferus Olin, and in 2012 it was won by the IG-88s with Ganner and Dodonna. It'll be interesting to see what comes out on top this year.

To open it up to the floor, what would YOU run at a 150 point tournament tomorrow?

Luke HOE, Han Rebel General, Leia - the new Versatilee piece, Chewy Fearless Scout, Obi Ghostee, R2 wi' Sensor, Original 3P0(!) and an Ewok. I am prevented from attended due to a duel with Darth Reallife. I hate him/her...

We ended up with 12 players. Congratulations to Darth Moore, who won his first major, on only his third try. And thanks to Bev for hosting HaweraCon for the fourth straight year, and doing a great job.

Here's a rough guide to the top 7 - I can't remember off the top of my head after that.

After 4 Rounds of Swiss.

#1 - Sharron - Daala, 5(?) Elite Scout Troopers, GARY, 2 Raxus Prime Troopers, Pellaeon, Slaver, R7

#2 - Darth Moore - Daala, GARY, Piett, Mas, Snowtrooper Officer, Slaver, bunch of Snowtroopers

#3 - Doug Platypus - Cin Drallig JBM, 29 point Aayla, Rex, R2 Astromech, Lobot

#4 - TheHutts - Daala, 5 Elite Scout Troopers, Jerjerrod, Pellaeon

#5 - kfcswaitingforyou - Cad Bane BH, Aurra Sing Assassin, Poggle, Geonosian Drones

#6 - Dr Daman - Grievous on modern Wheel Bike, BX Sniper, BX Spotter, Poggle, Geonosian Drones

#7 - Darth O - Kyp Jedi Master, Ganner, Dash, Jagged, etc

There were one or two more Kyp squads, and a Mando squad or two in the rest of the field - I didn't see all the squads.

We had four rounds, then a final. Darth Moore defeated Sharron in a very close final - hopefully one of them gives an account of it, as it was an epic game. Let's just say that Sharron is probably annoyed at whoever decided to give GARY Internal Strife.....

This was my squad:

--Jerjerrod's big chance--
27 Admiral Daala
16 Admiral Gilad Pellaeon
60 Elite Scout Trooper x5
12 Moff Jerjerrod
10 Stormtrooper Advance Scout
8 R7 Astromech Droid
8 Stormtrooper x2
9 Ugnaught Demolitionist x3
(150pts. 15 activations)

Before the tournament, I was pretty confident of my chances. I'd played a Elite Scout Trooper/Daala squad at Hutt100 (our annual 100 point tournament) a few weeks ago, and it had done well, and I figured it would translate OK to 150 points. I like the Elite Scouts, as they're tough to take down for a 12 point piece (50HP, Stealth, and Evade), and Daala gives them enough damage output and speed to make them top tier imo.

I was aware before the tournament that the +12 attack was their biggest issue, and in hindsight I should have worked in something like GARY or Wicket to get their attack up. I played four rounds - in rounds 1 and 4 I played New Republic Kyp squads, and dealt with them easily (in one game the score was 150-0, and in the other the score was 150-16). But I couldn't take down the opposing Elite Scout Trooper squad - with GARY, they were doing 50 a pop, so Sharron's Elite Scouts could take mine down in one shot, plus his Daala hitting reserves in round 2 meant that I lost my slight activation advantage. I was outplayed by Doug Platypus, who positioned well and made it hard for me to get good shots on his Jedi, who had good ranged defense, while his Rex hid behind them and systematically took down my Scouts.

I think these were the standings for the last 5:

Bevan - Kyp JM, Ganner, original Anakin Solo
Baz - Mandalore the Resurrector, Shae Viszla, Fenn Shysa, mando protector x2
Rich - Kyp JM, new Anakin Solo, Dash
Kahu - Pre Viszla, Shae Viszla, mando scouts, probably more mandos. (Sorry, only saw it near the end of a game)
Nick - Darth Sion, Shae Viszla, Dash, Lobot

So we had 3 squads with Daala, 3 with Kyp JM, and 3 with Shae Viszla. By my count, only one squad didn't feature Command of the Galaxy or Vehicles of War!

This is Bev, the tournament organiser, official report from Facebook too:

Quote:
HaweraCon 2013 - (150 point squad competition)
What a spectacular event it was this year, especially the final!!!

I doubt we could ever witness a more epic final match!!!
Paul took it out over Aaron 144 - 145 in the last round as time was up.
And yes I typed that score line correctly!
The final rounds in this game were incredibly close and intense and just when things seemed settled in Aaron's favour a heartbreaking roll using GARY destroyed his hopes and handed Paul the outright win.

Top four squads:

1.Paul - No business like snow business
Daala, piett, GARY, Czerka, snowtrooper officer,Mas, Zyg Slaver, 9 x snowtroppers

2.Aaron - Turn it up
Daala, Pallaeon, GARY, 5 x elite scout troopers, Zyg Slaver, 2 x Raxus prime troopers

3.Dave Rei Millar - Cin City
Cin Dralig JB, Rex, Aayla Secura JK, Lobot

4.Graham - Jerjerrods Big Chance
Daala, Pellaeon, 5 x elite scout troopers, Jerjerrod, storm trooper AS, 2 x storm troppers.

Congrats to all 12 winners who attended this year.
Especially to those who made the effort to come from afar to support this great game.
Cheers to having a great tourney people, hope to see another great effort at Hamilcon early next year!
Bevan

I just cleared my wife's camera, and found some action shots that we took during the final.

Here we see Darth Moore and Sharron in their setup positions:

And here's a late game (or end game?) shot:

Wow, looks exciting! And I'm thrilled to see Cin Drallig with a 3rd place finish! I'm honestly surprised by how well the Daala swarms have been doing. Those Elite Scouts are pretty nasty. I'll have to look into that squad more carefully soon.

Darth Moore, who won the tournament, has been very graciously talking about how he didn't win it, but Daala did. With the 3 Daala squads only losing games to each other, apart from one loss to the Cin Drallig squad, there's a pretty good case. At 150, there's just not as much strafe around, so they were able to do really well - even at 200, I'm imagining they'll be a force, and they're something I'm planning around for our upcoming NZ tournaments.

I think CE pimped Snowtroopers have more power, but Elite Scout Troopers are more well rounded - they don't seem to have any really terrible matchups - strafe is probably tough, but with 50 hp they can at least survive one strafe from a twinning Lancer. They're not as reliant on CEs as the Snowtroopers either, so they should be able to hold their own against Bastila too, and with 50hp, stealth, and evade, they take an effort to take down. With minimal commanders, you also don't need to spend 8 points on Mas Amedda. billiv15 mentioned on SHNN a long time ago that they didn't make Vader Agent of Evil CE work with Scout Troopers, otherwise everyone would just use the Elite Scout Troopers.
