Once a year, in Lower Hutt New Zealand, we have a tournament where we play our games over a period of time. As well as being able to play your games over a period of time, the other big talking point for this tournament is that you can use a different squad for each game. It leads to some fun meta-gaming predicting what your opponent will run, and you can bring some wacky squads that you probably wouldn't bring to a multi-round tournament, but which you think will work fine for a one-off game.
I enjoy seeing what squads other playgroups are using, so I figured you guys might want to see the squads we're playing. This year, we have a group of seven players in Lower Hutt who automatically qualified (based on performance in majors during the year and on current ranking), and we had a qualifying tournament to see which of the less experienced players joined us for the remaining three spaces in the pools; picking a different squad for each game is super fun, but it can be hard on players with smaller collections who always run the same faction, so not everyone was keen, which is fine. We have two groups of five, who will all play each other, and the 3 top qualifiers from each group will go through to the next round.
Qualifying Tournament Conveniently, we just had three players for our qualifying tournament - so everyone qualified automatically, and the games were just for seeding. We had: Hayden: Fringe, Talon Kardde IB, Embo, Dash, Shada Dukal, Jarael, Marn Danny: Caedus SL, Atton Jaq, Dash, GARY, Ponda Baba GC Henko: Lucien Draay JM, Atris, Echanis * 2, Brianna, Jedi Healer
Danny won both his games, so qualified top - he edged out Hayden in a tough, low scoring game, where he took advantage of Hayden's lack of door control. Hayden, however, did sneak past Henko in the final round to clinch 2nd. While the game's spread well throughout the North Island of New Zealand, a lot of the winners of national events come from participants in the Hutt Regional - nine of New Zealand's ten majors have been won by players participating in the Hutt Regional.
So the pools look like this: Pool A: Dr Daman (NZ National champion) Sharron (2010-11 Hutt Regional champion, 1 major win) Darth Moore (HaweraCon 2013 champion) Danny Hayden
Pool B: Kezzamachine (made the final of the NZ National Championship) Mike Moore Smuggler (2012-13 Hutt Regional champion) TheHutts (2011-12 Hutt Regional champion) Ian Henko
We're set to kick off Pool B tonight at Kezza's house, so I'll let you know what happens.

We had a few games last night. This is Kezzamachine's summary of what went down:
First games, I believe, of the Hutt Regional kicked off at my house last night (16th of Dec.). Our group of me, Mike, Graham, Henko and Ian got underway, trying to play each other before January 15th. Top3 (I believe) go through to the next round.
Graham smashed me 250-62 on Jabba's Palace. I brought Speedy Durge, Sidious, the IG Lancer, Lobot, San, a BDO, Poggle and 11 bombs, bringing in an MTB and a Twi'Lek Bodyguard. He rolled a dice of his squad, rolled a '3' which meant he brought Mace, GOWK, Rex, Ferus, R2 and not much else. It was always going to be tough but I forgot some key things: Ferus is a JEDI bodyguard, not a regular one... and that the Zygerian would have been light years better than the MTB. Lesson learnt, loss taken. Congrats to Graham whose placement of his pieces was flawless!
Mike then trounced Henko 217-32 on Cantina. Mike (sitting on the same side of the table as me) ran Speedy Durge, Grievous HOH, a Spotter/Sniper combo and bombs, which knocked over Henko's Sion, Khem Val, a Blademaster, an Inquisitor and Ghostie Exar. Unlike me, Mike actually knew how to run Durge.
Lastly, I bested Mike 200-10 on Ravaged Base. Mike was running the scary Revan, Bastila, Satele, Lobot combo (which he brought in Evazan), but it was negated from the word go by my choice of Talon, Embo, Jarael, Marn, Dash and a TBSV.
Ian and Henko were about halfway through their game, but Henko's ride arrived and they had to call it short. They'll replay that one with the same squads.

OK - we've had a bunch more games. In Pool 1 we've had: Dr Daman's report Quote:Darth Moore ran Vong. D'gara, quorreal, warrior caste sub commander , 10 praetorite vong scouts and 4 ossus protectors. I ran Cad bane bounty hunter, Zam BH, BX spotter, BX sniper, poggle, san hill Lobot, 15 drones and filler. I won 142-88.
Me v Sharron on cantina (my map) Sharron played solo charge with an ossus protector instead of gha nackt. I played Graham's vong bomb squad with tyber, nom and so on. Sharron won 161-22
Sharron v Darth Moore on jabbas (Paul's map) Sharron ran the same solo charge squad. Darth Moore ran talon karrde, Celeste morne, dash RS, 2 rank ghoul warriors, Lobot and filler. Sharron won 200-71. Pool 1 Standings: Sharron 5 (2 games) Dr Daman 2 (2 games) Darth Moore 0 (2 games) Danny 0 Hayden 0 And in Pool 2 we've had: Quote:Firstly, Ian and Henko (thePurplePhlurp) replaced their interrupted matchup from a couple of weeks ago - Henko was playing his Sith squad again, with v-set Sion, Khem Val, a Blademaster, an Inquisitor, 2 Gloomwalkers, and Exar DFS. There was a bit of confusion, as Exar can only haunt a unique with a force rating, so Sion was the only viable recipient, but he can't get Force Renewal. Either way, Ian's Fringe squad with Talon Karrde, Jarael, Embo, Dash, and Marn negated it - Jarael was on fire with her save rolls, and only took 20 damage all game after fighting in the frontlines. Despite having the edge, Ian didn't quite close out the 3 point win, he was at 111-45 when time was called - in the heat of battle he forgot to close Talon in so that Sion was in the Force Bubble, so Sion died twice in the last round, but made both Eternal Hatred saves. On Cantina.
Next, Henko pulled out a really good Mando squad, with Resurrector, Fenn Shysha, 2 Protectors, Jaster Mereel, and a Training Sergeant. I rolled my dice, and got a 3, which meant it was Mace/GOWK/Rex/Ferus/R2 again, and I won map so we played on Jabba's Palace. Henko's squad was really well put together, but its Achilles Heel against my squad was that his stats were too low to hit my tank pieces consistently. Still, I had to play very carefully around the Covert Ops, the death shots, and the protector shots, and didn't quite complete the 3 point win. Jaster ended up with 20 hp remaining, as I won 175-42.
Finally, I rolled a 3 for the 3rd consecutive game, so I played Mace/GOWK/Rex/Ferus again, while Ian had a squad with IG-88s, Aurra Sing Assassin, and Hondo Ohnaka. We both had Jabba's Palace as our map. This was a horrific matchup for my squad, as Mace is really ineffectual against the IG-88s, and I made a terrible start when Hondo sniped Rex from across the board at the start of round 2. Unbelievably, from there, my squad somehow squeezed a win; GOWK pulled out a huge Force Push 3 (easy to forget he has that), while Ferus risked a couple of big Dark Temptations, hit all his shots, and made the saves. It was tough on Ian, who played the squad well, but didn't get any points to take away, although Mace was on his last legs by the end of the game. 200-47. Plus we've also had 4/1/14: Mike (Imperial Celeste) beat Ian (Resurrector, Fenn Shysha, 2 Protectors, Kelborn, and a Training Sergeant) 232-39 on Jabba's Palace. Pool 2 Standings: TheHutts 8 (3 games) Mike Moore Smuggler 6 (3 games) Kezzamachine 3 (2 games) Ian 2 (3 games) thePurplePhlurp 0 (3 games)

As a note, I got home from a party an hour ago, and over the evening I've had correspondence from about 4-5 different NZ players about the Regional. I just got a text saying "an Imperial Knight just put Cortosis Gauntlet on Ferus". It's a pretty cool format to run to get to try out all those cool squads you've come up with in a competitive setting.
In most recent news, Kezzamachine (Daala Snow Troopers) has just beaten Ian (Daala Scout Troopers) 89-76 on Jabba's Palace. Sounds like a Jorus/AniStap squad is taking on an Imperial Knight squad right now as well.
Pool 2 Standings: TheHutts 8 (3 games) Mike Moore Smuggler 6 (3 games) Kezzamachine 5 (3 games) Ian 2 (4 games) thePurplePhlurp 0 (3 games)

Right!
Pool A is all but finished with two more games happening last night - both involving me! The first was my key clash with Ian, with the winner having a pretty good shot at being the third qualifier from Pool A. We surprised each other by both revealing Daala squads(!), Ian's variant having 7 Elite Scouts and 3 Stormies, mine having 8 Snowtroopers and 3 Stormies. (Mine also had Veers and that accurate was pretty awesome.) Anyhoo, Ian won map and we lit up Jabba's palace, but with two nervous players who were running Daala for the first time and 48 activations on the board(!), we managed just three rounds. Ian called it a 'war of attrition' and it was just that. I edged out Ian 89-76 in a close battle.
Next I faced Henko (thePurplePhlurp). Henko was already out of contention but has grown as a player despite losing the previous 5 games. His squads are getting better and better and he surprised me with a stunner: new Roan Fel, Marasiah, Imperial Knight Master, Strike Leader and a normal Knight, new Zam, Todo and 3 uggies. Holy moly. I revealed my Walk Through Walls squad: Jorus, Anistap, Ferus, Dark Woman etc. and was immediately freaked out about Cortosis Gauntlet! I won map (Cliffside) and I gambled and brought in Momaw and Salacious with Lobot. In round 1 and 2, I Momaw'd his 3 uggies and then Force Phased Anistap through a wall to take out Todo. Then, using R2 and Lobot, I locked him in the central room for the remainder of the game. Ugly win, but I did open the door, attacked Marasiah with Ferus and got cortosis'd... it was a scary squad and I played to my strengths, but I reckon you'll see this squad from Henko again! 103-34 to me.

OK - we've had a bunch more games in Pool 1. On Sunday we had:
Sharron v Danny 199-45 3pts-0pts simulation deck Danny: caedus, atton, dash, GARY, Lobot, exar DFS, klat captain and filler Sharron: solo charge variant
Dr Daman v Danny 199-14 3pts-0pts on simulation deck Danny: caedus, atton, dash, GARY, Lobot, exar DFS, klat captain and filler Dave: strike the right corde
Sharron v Hayden 215-82 3pts-0pts cantina Sharron: solo charge variant Hayden: talon, alto, nimbus x3, klat assassin, chiss captain and filler
Darth Moore v Hayden 168-102 2pts-1pt rhen var Darth Moore: thrawn, Celeste, Mas, Ozzil, rak warrior x2, Lobot, slaver and filler Hayden: talon, embo, dash, shada, marn, jarael, evazan and filler
Dr Daman v Hayden 209-14 3pts-0pts on jabbas Dr Daman: strike the right corde Hayden: talon, embo, dash, shada, marn, jarael, evazan and filler
Darth Moore v Danny 183-86 2pts-0pts on rhen var Darth Moore: talon, dash, Celeste, rak warrior x2, Lobot and filler Danny: caedus, atton, dash, GARY, Lobot, exar DFS, klat captain and filler
That leaves:
Pool 1 Standings: Sharron 11 (4 games) Dr Daman 8 (4 games) Darth Moore 4 (4 games) Hayden 1 (3 games) Danny 0 (3 games)
With 1 games to play, the qualifiers are already decided. Each player carries through their points against the other qualifiers to the next round. So we have: Sharron 5 (2 games) Dr Daman 2 (2 games) Darth Moore 0 (2 games)
Meanwhile, in Pool 2, I played Mike Moore Smuggler on Sunday. Mike won 184-43 on Rancor Pit. We both had Durge on Speeder/Geonosian squads - Mike had Grievous HoH and Spotter/Sniper, I had more Bombs + Whorm/2*IG-86s. The telling moment was at setup, when I was on autopilot with my Lobot reinforcement choices, and I forgot never to bring in an MTB against San Hill...... So Mike got an extra 10 Drones for nothing, which gave him the activation advantage. The activation advantage also allowed Momaw to charge in and take out a bunch of drones. The Spotter/Sniper combo is a really good addition to the squad - as well as many other things, it makes it hard for the opponent to play Momaw (a great Poggle bomb counter) without a good movement breaker.
Pool 2 Standings: Mike 8 (4 games) TheHutts 8 (4 games) Kez 7 (4 games) Ian 2 (4 games) Henko 0 (4 games)
So the qualifiers from Pool 2 are: Mike 2 (2 games) - as he's pointed out, he carries the least points through, despite winning the pool. TheHutts 3 (2 games) Kez 3 (2 games)

If you look at those Pool 1 results, a lot of the winning squads are fundamentally WOTC, despite some v-set pieces sprinkled in. There's still a ton of power in Thrawn swap squads and in Ganner/Mara/Anakin/Dodonna/Disruptive, and tempo control is still uber useful in a lot of matchups - the lack of tempo/tempo counter is the worst thing about Fringe squads IMO, even though they're really good otherwise. Definitely a good case for v-sets augmenting the meta, rather than supplanting it.

Activations (squads with Dodonna, San, Ozzel or a large amount of cheap grunts that can do things) Movement breakers (swap, tow, levitate, SBM, master lift, free CE moves/attacks) Mass killing (strafe, gallop, war throat, burst, UtF, blaster barrage) Damage Negation (Soresu mastery, parry, evade etc) I would also characterize them in those order of strengths. You can beat tempo control with speed, mass killing and damage negation (its the republics forte after all) but its hard and tempo control with movement is about as tough as things get. WotC did far more with each of those than the Vsets ever have (damage negation is up to debate because of Zanna but GOWKS mettle really makes a better supplement of MotF2 soresu mastery than Lightsaber defense expert). Vsets for the most part have just tried to fill in the gaps, there have been miss-steps along the way but the core mechanics of the big 5 factions have been untouched and should remain so. When the central tenets of the main factions become weak verses the V sets, the Vset will have jumped the shark and failed in their design. However, its very hard to do because these central mechanics are very very tough.

I'm certainly not disagreeing with your post overall, but I'd probably argue that Poggle the Lesser has shaped the core mechanics of Separatists - he's given the Seps access to useful, cheap activations, and synergises comfortably with initiative control. The San Hill/Poggle/Geonosian Drone/access to MTB is the backbone of almost every good Separatist squad that I've seen. The Seps were arguably heading in that direction anyway - they probably had the most synergy with Gha Nachkt, the other source of 2 point pieces, and already had tempo control, but Poggle has solidified that some more.

Poggle was one of the miss-steps i spoke of. Seps didn't need it.

We've now launched into the Super 6 stage of the tournament - the top 3 qualifiers from each group carry through their points against the other qualifiers, and play the qualifiers from the other pool. In terms on NZ minis, this is an uber-tough group with no easy games - all of the 6 players involved made the top 7 in the last year's SWM National Tournament. Here are the games from last night:
Darth Moore bt Kezzamachine 160-45 on Jabba's Palace. Darth Moore was running Strike the Right Corde, and Kez was running Lou's Rebel IG-88 squad.
TheHutts bt Sharron 200-44 on Asteroid Base. TheHutts was running Mace/GOWK/Ferus/Rex, and Sharron was running Solo Charge with the Vong bodyguard.
Mike Moore Smuggler bt Dr Daman 108-66 on Rhen Var. Mike was running Talon, Cad Bane, Jarael, and Marn, while Dr Daman was running Luke Hero of Endor, Leia, Crix Madine, Biggs, an ERC, and Jon 'Dutch' Vander.
Dr Daman bt TheHutts 200-54 on Peaceful City. Dr Daman was running 15 Raxus Prime Troopers with Daala, Piett, GARY, two Zygerrians, Stormtrooper on Repulsor, and Flim. TheHutts was running 7 Elite Scout Troopers with GARY, Daala, Pellaeon, and 3 Raxus.
Darth Moore beat Mike Moore Smuggler 179 (*3 point win as Mike's squad was defeated) - 46 on Ravaged Base. Paul was running his Caedus, Zannah, Vergere, 2 Spirits squad, and Mike was running Grievous on upgraded Wheelbike with BX Snipers.
Sharron beat Kez 206-74 (27/1/14) on Rancor Pit to take a 3-0 victory. He ran his good ol' Revan/OR squad (and I picked Solo Charge - more fool me) and Kez ran The Thon Song (Bastila, Thon, Atton, Carth, Klat Capt.).
That leaves the current standings as: Sharron 8 (4 games) TheHutts 6 (4 games) Dr Daman 5 (4 games) Darth Moore 5 (4 games) Mike Moore Smuggler 4 (4 games) Kezzamachine 3 (4 games)

We're now at 7 out of 9 games played in the Super 6 stage, and the latest result is: Aaron v mike 201 - 160 on asteroid base Aaron: Revan, mando the lesser, kaan, elite supercomm, Lobot, recruit, filler Mike: Luke hoe, Biggs, Jon Dutch, Princess Leia, klat captain, crix, ERC, Lobot and dodonna
The big news from this is that defending champion Mike Moore Smuggler is out of the competition. He's had a rough tournament, with Zannah making a statistically unlikely and game-warping 120 hp of Lightsaber Combat Expert saves in his matchup against his twin brother Darth Moore, and also being very close to a 3 point win in his matchup against me. Condolences to Mike, who's a very ardent competitor, and best wishes as he convalesces from knee surgery.
That leaves the current standings as: Sharron 11 (5 games) TheHutts 6 (4 games) Dr Daman 5 (4 games) Darth Moore 5 (4 games) Mike Moore Smuggler 5 (5 games) Kezzamachine 3 (4 games)
Games left to play: Darth Moore vs TheHutts Dr Daman vs Kezzamachine

OK, we've got one Super6 game to go, and we've found 3 of our 4 semi-finalists.
Tonight saw TheHutts bt Darth Moore158-28 on Bothan Spynet. TheHutts: Daala, lots of Snowtroopers, GARY, Piett, Snow Officer, Snow Commander, Raxus * 2, Ug * 3, Zygerrian, Pellaeon. Darth Moore: Strike the Right Corde (Cad Bane, Morrigan, Thrawn, Ozzel). I swapped out GARY for Ozzel so I got a massive activation advantage, which all but negated Darth Moore's squad.
That leaves the current standings as: Sharron 11 (5 games) TheHutts 8 (5 games) Dr Daman 5 (4 games) Darth Moore 5 (5 games) Mike Moore Smuggler 5 (5 games) Kezzamachine 3 (4 games)
Kezzamachine and Darth Moore are fighting out for the last slot - Kezzamachine needs to get a solid win against Dr Daman (reigning NZ champion) to force his way into the semis.
Has anyone else found Daala squads doing well in their local groups? I know I've said in earlier posts on this thread that some traditional squad types are very solid, but at the same time, we've been seeing Daala squads do very, very well. I think, in competitive play in New Zealand, we've only seen one result where a Daala squad has lost to a non-Daala squad (and that was me being outplayed by doug*platypus in a matchup I should have had a good chance in). The good thing about Daala is that there is a big diversity in squad builds with her (we've seen Dr Daman's 15 Raxus Prime Trooper swarm, 20hp Snow Trooper swarms, and more robust Elite Scout Trooper builds), but even so it's having a big impact on squad choices in our local group. The addition of Lancer counters in v-set 7 is going to help Daala too.

I haven't played competitively in a long time (and there's hardly ever anyone around on Vassal anymore), but I'm surprised to hear so much news about Daala. It's a swarm squad, which means a lancer would eat it alive. I just think it's great that non-Thrawn Imperial squads are showing up in competitive play. Thanks for sharing all the results! And it was also great to see some GOWK/Ferus in there too. :) TheHutts wrote:Dr Daman bt TheHutts 200-54 on Peaceful City. I have a question, though, because I would've expected the Elite Scouts to win this one; the Elites have evade (and superstealth?) and their 50hp requires 2 shots from the Raxi (Raxuses?) for a kill, while the Scouts are making 1-shot kills every time they draw a LOS. Was it just a matter of out-activating each round and then using the Zygerrian to send a single Raxus in deep for 40dmg? It would seem to me that the Raxi would run out of viable options at some point. Anyway, I've never actually seen a matchup like this so would you mind giving a synopsis of how it went down?

Oh wait, I get it now: Flim (ie, Imperial Officer). That way you're trading your 4pt Raxus for a 12pt Elite Scout. Makes sense now. Move along. Move along.

It wasn't good to watch at all :). Dr Daman rolled a first round initiative of 6, so he bought in an Imperial Officer, so he could Zygerrian two Raxus and give them both extra attacks. Nothing I could really do about it, since I was badly outactivated. I think, with the Zygerrians, even the Lancer has to be careful. One Raxus can deep strike (wall climber) and potentially hit it for 40. A good Lancer player on the right map probably has a strong advantage, but the Daala swarms still do really well against a variety of squads.
I'm interested to see if the Daala strength that we've seen in New Zealand events flows through to Regionals in the states - I'd say that v-set 7 has only made them better with the introduction of more strafe counters.

I haven't lost with snowtroopers yet. I expect that multiple Daala squads will make the top 8 at gencon.

Since you can't bring Lobot in with Daala, you have to build in the strafe counters into your squad. And then it weakens it against anything else. It will be interesting to see what balance rises to the top
